Hancock, Wisconsin Monday, August 4, 2025

MADDIE HAD THE LIGHTS FLASHING AND SIRENS BLARING AS THEY raced north on Interstate 39 through the town of Hancock.

Ethan was studying the map on his phone.

“There’s a small lake in Rome,”

Ethan said.

“Lake Sherwood.

Looks like the address is to a house on the north side of the lake.”

“How far out are we?”

“Thirty minutes.”

“Should I ask for local backup from Nekoosa?”

“Your call.

But the information is coming from the most deranged man I’ve ever met.

I don’t know how accurate it is, or what we’re going to walk into when we enter the home.”

“You’re worried about a setup?”

“I don’t know.

Booby traps, maybe.

A wild goose chase more likely.”

“Okay,”

Maddie said.

“We’ll keep it to ourselves until we know what we’re dealing with.”

Ethan watched through the windshield as traffic braked and pulled to the side of the highway as he and Maddie sped past.

He looked down at the address on the index card.

A sickening feeling came over him.

He looked at Maddie.

“We’ve gotta hurry.”

Maddie pressed harder on the accelerator.
