Ken’s eyes darken. “You’re anything but a consolation price.”

I’m not sure what to make of this. It must show on my face, since he adds, “If we were in a regular party with normal people, and not in a nightmare with men looking at women as pieces of meat, any man would consider himself lucky to spend the evening with you.”

Surprised by the compliment, I look down and mumble, “Thank you.”

Ken slides a finger under my chin and lifts my face until I look at him. “I don’t say that just because you’re a good-looking woman—probably the most beautiful one here tonight. You’re also an exceptional person who didn’t hesitate for a second to help me when I needed to rush to my sister’s rescue. And you don’t know me.”

His words make me feel something I can’t describe. For a moment, I want to forget where we are and why we’re here. I want to lose myself in those green eyes that observe me as if we’re alone in the world. I want to get closer to him, slide my hands along his shirt, and put my arms around his neck.

If I dared, I would stand on my toes to drop a kiss on those lips. I suddenly want to taste them. I’m pretty sure he would let me. His thumb caresses my cheek. The very touch of his rugged skin electrifies me. I could lose my mind.

Steps on the other side of the door bring us back to reality.

We both freeze. Almost stop breathing. The steps come closer, and then the person walks away.

When the danger has passed, I whisper, “I better get back out there. Wait for a minute to follow. Even though Arkady already saw us together, it’s better not to arouse suspicion.”

I know I don’t really need to tell him that, but it’s easier than saying anything else. Anything related to what could have happened here if we hadn’t been interrupted.

I open the door slowly while Ken leans against the wall to avoid being seen. No one in sight.

Time to go back in the ring.
