Jack

N ate and I step into the hallway. The hospital door clicks closed behind us. Matt is doing well. He’s awake and has been up and walking around. He was hit in the shoulder, but the surgery went well. And with some aggressive physical therapy, he’ll be as good as new in no time. Nate and I assured him and his wife that all his medical bills and salary would be paid until he could come back to work.

Unfortunately, he didn’t have much more information than Tyler did, besides a vague description. He was too busy saving Tyler to get a better look. The detectives are pulling any security camera footage from businesses in the area, including the venue, but so far, there hasn’t been anything helpful found.

I pinch the bridge of my nose in frustration.

Ian joins, handing coffees to each of us .

“So what is next?” he asks.

I shake my head. “I don’t think there’s anything else we can do today. I want to go check on Tyler. But you both can head out. I’ll be in the office soon after I pick up Gisella.”

I take a long sip of my coffee when I feel my phone vibrate in my pocket.

My stomach drops. Why is the employee watching my house and Gisella calling me?

“Kyle.”

“Sir, we have a problem.”

I slap Nate’s arm to get his and Ian’s attention and prevent them from walking away. “What is it?”

“Miss Easton’s been arrested.”

My muscles tense. Anger rolls through my body as I spit out, “When?”

“About five minutes ago.”

I disconnect the call and scroll through my contacts, clicking the one I need.

“Jack, I’m going to start charging you overtime.”

“Why the fuck didn’t you call me?” I bark.

“Uh, about what? I don’t have any updates on anything.”

“Gisella was fucking arrested,” I shout, garnering glares from the nurses and surprised expressions from Nate and Ian.

“Fuck,” he mutters. “Let me call you back.”

He disconnects the call.

Ian points toward the elevator. “Let’s go. We can figure out what is going on.”

As we walk out of the doors of the hospital, I call one more person, heart racing.

“Jack, what can I do for you?”

“Chris, Gisella was arrested.”

Silence is my answer. “That doesn’t make any sense. ”

I raise my hand in an I don’t know gesture, even though he can’t see me. “Carlos is looking into it. I need you on this. I need her out.”

“Consider it done.” He disconnects.

As we get closer to our vehicles, Nate turns to us. “Meet at the office?”

My vibrating phone interrupts my answer, and I put it on speaker.

“Carlos, what did you find out?”

“Meet me at your house.”

“What? Why?” I ask, totally caught off guard.

“I’ll explain when you get there. Is anyone with you?”

I glance up. “Yeah, Nate and Ian.”

“Good, bring them with you.”

All of us can tell by the tone in Carlos’s voice that we aren’t going to like what he has to say.

As I drive to my house, every worst-case scenario runs through my mind. I don’t even know what to think.

I pull into my driveway minutes later, Nate and Ian right behind me. Kyle is stalking across the street before I’m even out of the car. I nod a greeting to him as we all head inside. Carlos is there before I can shut the door.

We gather in my kitchen, and I cross my arms over my chest. I’m trying with every ounce of strength I have to not lose it completely. “Okay, Carlos. We’re all here. Tell us what you couldn’t tell me over the phone.”

Carlos takes a breath and locks his stare on mine, his lips in a grim line. “I need you to stay calm.”

All I can manage is a terse nod.

“There’s no record of Gisella being arrested.” He pauses to let what he said sink in. My nostrils flair, jaw muscles clenched. “There’s no warrant. No police were sent here to arrest her.”
