Fletcher didn’t even look at me before he jumped to his feet and saluted the British man. “Sure thing, mate.” He said, mimicking Charon’s accent.
Charon gagged. “Never call me that again.”
“Boss or mate?” Fletcher cocked his head to the side in confusion, but his grin grew wider.
“Both.” Charon winced. “But the wordmatefrom one of you yanks just sounds wrong.”
Fletcher scoffed and turned to me, his eyes dragging over my incorporeal form as his lips pulled into a grin. “Hello. ” he elongated the word as he cocked his head to the side.
Charon opened his mouth to speak, but Fletcher wiggled his brows.
“This is the influencer. The one who died in the pool last night. Fuck. I forgot her name.” Fletcher seemed to take macabre delight in how I died.
“I’m right here,” I snarled.
Both men ignored me.
“You can’t just tell a soul how they died!” Charon snapped. “Besides, she’ll get her memories back soon enough. She doesn’t need to be reminded.”
“Protective, are we?” Fletcher’s eyes sparkled with mischief.
Charon didn’t answer.
Fletcher didn’t even look a little bit sorry. He tilted his head back and whistled as if he was summoning a dog, craning his neck as he searched for someone.
Rome came sauntering down the central aisle between the two rows of desks a moment later.
Rome took in Fletcher’s dusty form but dismissed both Charon and me.
Rome held a sandwich in his hand and took a bite, chewing slowly, before he held out the sandwich and offered it to Fletcher.
Fletcher nudged him, but didn’t take the sandwich. “Valentina Rossi,” He declares proudly. “The one who drowned in the pool—”
“Fletcher—” Charon warned.
“Found her!” Fletcher declared.
Rome quirked a brow and swallowed his mouthful of food. “Who do you think brought her in,??????”
Fletcher didn’t seem deterred; he simply turned to Charon. “Wardrobe, right?” nodding to me.
Charon nodded stiffly, giving me one last look that said‘don’t fuck this up’ before turning on his heel and marching away.
Rome took another bite of his sandwich.
“So... Do you prefer Valentina or Val?” Fletcher asked, addressing me for the first time.
Rome snorted a laugh. “Don’t bother. She’s just a wisp.”
Fletcher gave him a meaningful look. “She’s going towardrobe.”
Rome quirked a brow before turning to me. “Who the hell did you blow to become a Reaper,Myshka?”
I gave him a dry look. “I can’t blow anyone. I’mdead.”
Rome didn’t ask again; he just held my gaze as he waited for an answer.
I rolled my eyes. “My friends call me Vallie.”
