“Can you sing?” I asked.
She giggled. “That’s a good point. I’d probably scare them away.”
I raised my eyebrow. “Maman told me I sing like a nightingale.”
Her eyes widened. “Really?”
I laughed and shook my head as I remembered how she’d curled her nose when I’d been forced to perform. “No… Adrien is the only one of us who could hold a tune, and maybe Kir.”
We were in the shallow end, where she could walk easily, and she leaned closer. “Next question. How’s your dancing?”
I answered, “I’m not like Cyrus, but I’m not horrible if put on the spot.”
“He’s the ballroom dancer?”
I blinked and asked, “Did they talk about it when you met him and his wife?”
“They were excited about winning seventy-five dollars, which I thought was funny.”
The moon was starting to come out, and the lights on deck flipped on.
I scratched the back of my head. “Why?”
“Because I’m sure to you and them, half my weekly paycheck was pocket change.”
She headed to the stairs, and I watched her wring her hair.
“Are we getting out?”
She nodded. “It’s time to shower and get ready for dinner, Dreamboat.”
Her new schedule. If that kept her happier, then it was great.
I joined her on the stairs. “I’ll follow you anywhere.”
“Good.” She tossed me a towel.
For the first time in a while, I had hope again. I wasn’t sure if that was bad or good, but it was growing in my chest. Maybe, one day, she would be ready to tell me she loved me while she was still awake.
