Domino leans toward me but doesn’t look away from the screen. “Had Grim and a prospect go by his place first to have a chat. They found the door unlocked and went in.”
“Unlocked?” I ask, turning my head to Domino, who turns his to wink at me and shrugs at the same time.
“Sure. That’s what we’ll tell the cops, at least. There were half a dozen pictures of you.
They called, told me, and we went hunting.
Found out he had a gym membership and checked there.
Things all fell into place at once, and we’re pouncing before we give the guy a second chance,” Domino mumbles, his attention drawn back to the screen.
I nod and look back at the feed too. Tommy seems to just be talking to him, but then the guy backs up and Tommy advances, and soon they’re sparring. Tommy takes a solid punch, and then the other guy is running for his bag. He pulls something out, and Tommy ducks.
“Shit, he’s got a gun,” Lucky breaks the obvious news for us.
“Fuck. Call Tommy’s men and tell them to stand down.
Tell them—” Domino stops talking because the guy is no longer standing.
He’s fallen after flinching and jerking four times.
My brain takes a second to register he was shot by someone.
Probably whoever Domino was worried would retaliate and protect their boss.
The room is quiet for a long time. No one does anything until Domino’s phone rings.
“Yeah?” I watch as Tommy holds a phone to his ear and then looks directly at the camera. “I can see that,” Domino grits out. “Check his stuff and make sure anything that connects him to Viv is lost before the cops show. I don’t want her connected to this.”
He doesn’t even look at me, but he’s protecting me.
If the cops connect this guy to me, then I might get more than a pat on the back.
I might get attention, and that’s the last thing I want.
Especially on fight night. Mack’s brother knows who I am, and what I do.
I’m surprised he hasn’t ratted me out, but I don’t really know if it’s because he knows me or if it’s to keep Mack out of jail.
The guy might claim to hate his brother, but I still don’t see Mack getting locked up.
And from the way of the law, running an illegal gambling ring based around an underground fight club isn’t necessarily going to earn him the Citizen of the Year award.
Might not lead directly to jail, but some of the other things Mack’s involved in could.
He isn’t necessarily considered a law-abiding citizen.
He doesn’t fall into that category at all.
And good guys don’t run underground fight clubs.
They run them if they’ve got cookies in other jars that are far worse than this slap on the wrist in comparison.
Domino hangs up and looks at me.
“So, does that mean we’re good? We got him?”
He scratches the back of his head with a nod and then a shake of his head.
“Yes and no. From what we found, we think this was the guy. But are we a hundred percent sure? No. We needed to talk to him to get the full details, but everything else matches. Unless you’ve got another stalker out there, we caught the bastard. ”
I bite my bottom lip over and over again as I nod, letting it sink in. The idea that I’m no longer someone’s obsession. That I can go back to the way things were. Though I plan on keeping some of the new things. Like my bed partner. No need to lose him in all of this.
“Does that mean you don’t have a problem with me fighting tonight? Even going to come?” I bat my eyelashes a few times as I smile innocently.
He shakes his head and then smiles, huffing out a laugh through his nostrils. “Why would I think you’d be worried about anything else?”
I shrug. “Just means you don’t know me that well. But give it a few more weeks of fucking on the stairs and we can call us square.”
The guys laugh around us, and a grin spreads wide on his lips. We all know it happened. Even if no one talks about it, it’s like the freaking Easter Bunny—out of sight, but on your mind when you see a colored egg. But for us, it’s the back stairwell and not a colorful protein meal.
He grabs my chin and pulls me close. I go willingly and enjoy the small height advantage he has over me, so I have to look up at him. “Yeah, baby, you can go. And you better win, because I only fuck winners.”
I raise an eyebrow. “What if I lose?”
He leans in close and whispers for only me to hear. “Then you fuck me.”
Decisions, decisions. What’s a girl to do?
“You ready to go, Menace? ”
I look up and see Link smiling down at me as I sit at one of the open tables in the club.
I’ve been down here for about five minutes now.
Domino texted me five minutes before that to say he was just finishing things up.
But the fact that he sent another brother here tells me things aren’t ending soon.
“Where’s Domino?”
“He got held up and asked me to get you there for the intro.”
“Sounds good. Let me get my stuff.”
“No worries. I’ll start the truck and be out front.”
I nod and watch him go before I pull out my phone and call Domino. Only took a week for the new one to come in so I could call out without getting a sliced finger. He answers on the first ring.
“You’re seriously going to have your lackey take me?” I whine.
He chuckles. “I promise I’ll make it up to you.
There are just a few issues with the guy at the gym, and since I owe Tommy for being the one there, I’ve got to finish it up.
Plus, I need to fill in my mother chapter about some other club business.
But I promise I’ll be there before you even get your hands wrapped up. ”
“I’m holding you to that. ’Cause if you miss it and I win, I get to have my way with you for a full twenty-four hours. And you can’t say shit.”
“Yes, mama,” he purrs, and it goes straight to the girl between my legs.
She’s more into Domino than I am, which is a hard hill to climb, ’cause I like this guy way more than I’ve ever liked anyone before.
It’s a little scary, but in a good way. Like how you get your first punch in the face and you’re worried your nose is broken, and then find out it’s not and you can kick the other person’s ass instead for making you freak out.
You know the feeling? No? Must be a me thing.
I hang up and grab my bag before heading out to the idling truck parked right out front. I hop into the cab, and Link smiles at me.
“Ready?”
“As I’ll ever be.”
