“You’ll be sore every day with me around.” I smack her ass before she climbs off me.
This time, she doesn’t bother scowling at me. She beams and points at the driver’s side door. “Now I’m driving us home.”
I climb out the door and into the passenger’s seat while she slides behind the steering wheel. “Don’t kill us.”
But she’s not paying attention to my teasing. Her focus is solely on her phone clutched in both hands.
“What is it?”
Eyes round, she opens her mouth, but no words come out. She’s deciding whether she wants to tell me the truth or brush it off. Because she knows the truth will set me off. “It’s...him.”
It can’t be. We made our message to him loud and clear. He knows who he’s messing with now. The angel with three Devils at her back.
He can’t possibly be fucking stupid enough to keep trying to get to her.
I snatch her phone from her hands. A text on her screen from an unsaved number.
Unknown
You’ll regret this.
I squeeze the phone so hard, I swear a corner of the glass cracks.
Fucking Jeremiah. He’s still fucking contacting her. Even after all the shit he’s put her through, everything she’s done to get him to stay away.
We knew a court order wouldn’t stop him. Apparently, half a million dollars won’t either.
He’s determined to get to Aurora. No matter the cost.
Soon, he’ll learn that cost may be his life.
Chapter 22
Finn
I love hearing your voice, but I also love your silence.
She has no idea those are the words I’ve been wanting to hear my whole life. Needed to hear, without even realizing it.
I almost told her I love her right then. The words have been on the tip of my tongue ever since. Waiting for the right moment to breathe them into her ear.
But fear keeps the words buried. By now, she knows already. She knows I love her. But she hasn’t said it either. Because I can’t expect that. Can’t expect her to love me, accept me, for all that I am. All that I can’t offer her.
What I can do is bring her a coffee while she studies in the library. Her favorite. Iced caramel macchiato. Light on the milk and ice. Heavy on the espresso, vanilla syrup, and caramel sauce.
Halfway between the coffee shop and the library, a familiar face captures my attention. I spin to head in the other direction.
But I’m too late.
Footsteps run up behind me, and my sister punches my arm before her eyes widen at the coffee she nearly makes me spill. With a hand, she signs,Sorry!
Asshole.
She sticks her tongue out at me.
What are you doing here?
College tour. She gestures to a group heading into the library.
