Page 105 of Desired for Her Blood
The warmth of happiness floods inside me. I am a nocturnal creature too now, and I am no longer alone. The ten years since my mother died were so long I’d forgotten how anything beyond solitude feels, and I know deep inside that I will never be alone again.
I don’t think I realized until now, how badly I yearned for a family, companionship, and a sense of belonging. Could my mother still be alive? There are so many mysteries to solve, but all that can wait. Right now, I just want to spend time with these men.
Zuben steps out of the forest into a field, and I follow.
“The house is up there.” He gestures. “It’s on the other side of this field. But we need to hurry to beat the sunrise.”
Happiness filling my heart, I step to his side so I can survey the field and our potential shelter.
My heart stops.
Then it starts beating so wildly I can’t breathe.
It’s not possible.
Unease creeps inside me as I try to make sense of what I am seeing and what it might mean.
“What is it?” Ryker moves around me and takes my shoulders in his hands so that he’s obstructing my view of the house. “What’s wrong?”
A huge stone blocks my throat, but I struggle to force the words out as I lean to look around him.
“The house,” I say faintly. “This place.”
“What is it?” Axe slides his warm hand up my back.
Shaking my head, I step around Ryker to confirm the impossible.
“This is our farm. This is where I grew up.”
