Page 19 of Demon Apathy: Sunderverse
I imagined her practicing with wooden swords, sparring with her classmates.
“It’s been fun but also… not fun,” she said.
We both laughed.
“I totally understand what you mean,” I said as she retreated and took a seat across from me in her desk chair. “That’s how I felt when I was training with LeBeau.”
She narrowed her eyes at the mention of the league’s previous director. “It’s odd how she just left. The Delegacy appointed Grant and that’s great. I mean… he’s great but the whole situation was just weird. I think there’s more to it than they’re letting on.”
I pursed my lips and pretended to examine her pilgrim turkey.
“You know something. I know you do.”
“I’m not sure I’m allowed to… share.”
“It’s fine. I understand. I’m sure, sooner or later, it’ll come out. Those kinds of things always find a way to reveal themselves.”
“True enough.”
Jenna pointed toward the big book on my desk. “What is that?”
“Some light reading material?”
“Does that mean you’re staying?”
“Does that mean you want me to?” I teased.
She pounded a fist on the table. “Hell yeah!”
“Wow, I never thought you would feel so strongly about it.”
“It’s been lonely, and I… regret so much. The way I treated you, you know?”
I shook my head. “I didn’t treat you much better, Jenna.”
She shrugged. “We were becoming friends, which is more than I can say for the rest of my classmates.”
“They’re not being too friendly?”
“I do hang out with a couple of people, but I’m not an easy person to get along with.”
“Me neither.”
“Maybe that’s why we click.”
“Maybe.” I thought for a moment, glancing from Jenna back to the tome. “Listen, I need to make a decision.”
“Yesss?”
“Maybe you can help me.”
“Yesss?”
“Do you remember the prophecy involving Striker’s Queller that I once told you about?” I had kind of thrown the information in her face when I thought she was jealous of me.
“I remember.”
“Well, it’s true. Thereisa prophecy about a person who can wield his sword. No one has been able to do it since he died.”
