Page 111 of Demon Apathy: Sunderverse
“Wantmeto drive?”
I started to release the pedal when Khargon appeared in front of the car again.
“Shit!” I slammed the brake and glowered at her.
She came to my window and knocked just like before. I rolled it down. “No time for this,” she said. “Solar is already there.”
“What?! How?” We had left before he did. There was no way he had already gotten to the Upper East Side.
“Divineintervention. Just like you’re getting divine obstruction.” She glanced over her shoulder at the red light, which still hadn’t changed.
“You mean that…?” I started between clenched teeth.
“Jophiel is helping him.”
“Damn!”
Khargon placed a hand on my shoulder and bent over to look at Sage. “Get yourself home.”
And the next thing I knew, we vanished.
When we materialized again, I staggered a step forward, head spinning, bile burning in my throat. Khargon helped me regain my balance and pushed me against the wall, pressing a finger to her sensuous mouth. From the looks of all the cars and concrete columns around us, we were in a multilevel parking deck.
The rumble of an engine sounded, approaching. I saw the headlights first, then a blue car drove by with Solar at the wheel. He parked a few yards away. Just as he got out of the car, the nearby elevator opened and Rebecca and Lunar Hudson walked out.
“Fuck!” Khargon exclaimed. “How convenient! I wonder who could’ve had a hand in making them leave their apartment at this hour.”
“I wonder,” I echoed sardonically.
“Any ideas?” the demon asked.
“What? Me?”
“Yeah, you. This is all unscripted, and you’re theChosen One. It’s up to you.”
Chosen One?!How dare she bring that up? And what did she think this was? A young adult novel?
Solar saw his mother and sister. Frowning, he walked in their direction. “Where are you two going?”
Rebecca was startled and put a hand on Lunar to stop her. “Oh, Solar! Honey, what are…?” She glanced about as if expecting trouble. “We just got a call saying you were in the hospital? Are you all right?”
“In the hospital?” Solar echoed, also looking around, almost spotting us.
We pulled back, exchanging a glance. Khargon gave me awhat’s the planlook.
My thoughts seemed to go around in circles, but no concrete courses of action materialized.
“Um, no, I’m fine,” Solar said.
“I see that,” Rebecca said, sounding annoyed, like a mother used to crazy shenanigans from her son. “Well, let’s get back upstairs.” She waved Solar on to accompany them.
“No,” he snapped.
Both Rebecca and Lunar blinked up at him.
“I… I just came to… see you.”
“At this hour?!” Rebecca asked.
