Story: Dangerous Double-Jeu

Chapter 11

Eve

The next m orning, Eve walked into the police station with the biggest smile on her face. Not only was she wearing a new dress - that made a girl happy - but she also had a new trophy at home. Last night’s fun with Jody had left her with a peculiar sense of accomplishment, and helped release some of her accumulated tension. Her day job was so stressful, after all.

Unfortunately Jody wasn’t the psychopath she was hoping for, but knowing all the shady things he’d done over the years, Eve figured he might as well be dead. As far as she was concerned, he perfectly fit her conditions for a good slaughter. Yes, she had criteria.

She practically skipped towards her office, ready for a good day of crime-solving. Or at least a good day of sneaking around, making coffee, and sending naughty pictures to Cyrus. Add a good fuck to this day, and it would be perfect. She immediately stopped all thoughts of fucking when she spotted Johnny, following her with his insipid look, she ignored him. Not today. She was feeling way too good for paying attention to him.

Her good mood didn’t last long, though. Andy caught up with her, bearer of bad news.

“Hey girl, you seem happy,” he said, raising an eyebrow.

“And you don’t,” Eve retorted.

He grunted. “Yeah, we have a body, one of our suspects.” He whispered the last words to her, but that made Eve stop her giddy walk, her eyes wide open.

“Really?” she asked, hysteria in her voice. Damn it, she knew she should have hidden the body. But there was no way she could have done that without being spotte d. She was at least hoping for two or three days before someone found him, she had turned on all the heaters in the tiny flat, knowing it would mess up the body a bit before being found. I should have burned the fucking building to the ground.

Andy didn’t seem to be shocked by her reaction and continued, gripping the file he had in his hands. “Yeah, and he didn’t have a good end, I can tell you that. He was tortured for sure, they even cut his d…” he stopped abruptly, certainly remembering who he was talking too. Eve was silent, trying to get a hold of her insides panicking.

“Anyway, better go.” Andy saw something above Eve’s shoulder and nodded his head. “Hey Mark, where the fuck you running? We have a body.”

She heard Mark’s footsteps before she saw him, glancing just in time to see him pass by, his coat on his arm, walking fast towards the exit. Not breaking his stride. “Nope, got a lead on the 11’s killer,” he said with a grin, a grin that said this could be good.

For him. Not for her.

Eve froze watching Mark run out the door, her stomach did a full backflip, followed by a spin, then a complete drop. Where had her perfect day gone? She was stuck. Both Andy and Mark? Both bad omens for her day.

She couldn’t follow Mark without being questioned, so she might as well head up to the anti-psycho team and cross all her fingers and toes that nothing could lead to her. I’m so glad I bought a mask.

Eve quickly went to drop her jacket in her office before heading to the anti-psycho room. She arrived, giving her usual smile to the team. None really noticed her, too busy looking at the new pictures on the new whiteboard.

Pictures of her artwork from last night.

Eeeek, I did that?

She didn’t even bother trying to hide, going straight to the board, standing beside Bonnie who was mumbling a mix of English and Spanish swear words. Eve tried the best she could to hold back a smile. He did have it coming. Jody was a rapist, with paedophiles tendencies, nothing people should cry about. Ok, he was now missing his dick, and his nails had all been torn off, but she had to make s ure he was telling the truth. It’s not her fault it took ten nails before finally accepting Jody’s talk as it was: he was innocent, and not her nemesis.

“She got him good.”

Eve felt her eyes jump out of their orbits as she turned towards Erik, his rectangular glasses showing some blur on the bottom, proof he had rushed here. She didn’t say a word, hoping someone would jump on it before she did, but after a few seconds, she had to accept the fact that nobody was going to help her.

“Her?” Eve asked, her voice as chill as she could keep it.

Erik nodded, and looked at her, as if wondering what she was doing here, looking at their boards.

“Yes, a witness thinks he was with a woman.”

“Ouch, bad date, uh?”

On her side, she felt Andy jump, scoffing. “That shit was not a date girl, look at him. I say that’s our freaking killer. The slashed peen, maybe even the 11’s.” He was mumbling, as if talking to himself, already imagining the possibilities.

“Or a copycat.” Bonnie turned away from the pictures and headed to her desk. “I think we need to keep in mind that this killer might give ideas to some people. And Jody had a sexual offender file, same as the slashed peen.”

“And now he is out of a dick too.” Andy smiled.

Eve wondered for one second if she should intervene, maybe give them the idea that the guy was also at the top of their list.

“Jody was one of our suspects in the serial killer case.” Erik sighed. “We need to imagine the possibility that’s what got him killed.”

Bonnie turned towards her Commander. “You think someone wanted to get to him before us?” She seemed to think about it as Erik nodded his head. “Then that means whoever we have on our suspect list needs protection, Erik.”

Andy slouched in his chair, a finger in the air. “That’s Cyrus Freaking McRory right there! He must have spied on us, took down the names, and went for a hunt to look for the killer himself.”

Eve, who was sitting at Andy’s desk, holding back a smirk, wondered if she should bury Cyrus or not. Couldn’t hurt to have some fun after all. She gasped. “My God, Andy, you think so?”

And y, happy for someone to finally listen to him, nodded, and was probably ready to enter a full-length description of why he thought Cyrus was the culprit when Erik stopped him.

“Enough. We keep as it is. Eve, back to your office, you are not needed right now. Andy, as I said, we keep an open mind. I agree this murder could go both ways, either it’s our 11’s killer, or someone who thought he was our serial killer.”

Andy stayed silent for two seconds.

“Does that mean I can look into Cyrus?”

Erik sighed rubbing his temples. “Yes. Yes, you can.”

Eve almost laughed. Poor Cyrus, but better him than her. Erik threw her a look, it was time for her to leave, so she jumped out of the room, leaving the team to their tasks.
