Page 52 of Danger and Dominance
“Wonderful.I love her. She’s going to be part of the book club with me,” Brenda said gleefully, as if it was a done deal.
Biting her lower lip in worry, Cassidy kept looking at David. He was looking at his grandmother.
Was the fact they’d scened together last night and things had gone a little farther than they’d meant to going to be part of his decision?Yes, she had a crush on him. That didn’t mean anything.
She wouldn’t let it mean anything.
She liked him.She was attracted to him.But she’d do a really good job of taking care of his grandmother even if he was a total jerk to her.She liked Brenda. No matter what happened between her and David, she would do a good job taking care of Brenda. If she got the job, that was.
Which she wasn’t sure of, even though she wanted it even more now that she’d met Brenda.
“Oh, yeah?”David asked tiredly, leaning back against the booth. He looked tired but also resigned. He smiled at Cassidy.A really nice, sweet smile that made her feel a little melty.
Did that mean that she had the job?
Hope started to rise up in her chest.
“Yup.”Brenda winked at Cassidy.“You said I could choose my next companion, remember?”
“I remember.”David’s smile became a little crooked.Seeing this softer side of him with his grandmother was not helping her crush at all.It was making it way, way worse. His gaze met Cassidy’s.“I guess you’re hired.”
“Thank you!Thank you so much. You won’t regret it.”
She hoped.

Cassidy
Despite everything, Cassidy was incredibly excited to have a job.Brenda seemed wonderful. She was aware of the danger of Cassidy’s ex but reassured her that she would be perfectly safe at home.David had her schedule, and any time they went out, someone from the team would be there with them, but at her home, it was just as secure as Jensen’s.
Maybe more.
Brenda had promised to show Cassidy the panic room first thing when she came over on Monday. She made it seem like an adventure. Her casualness about everything made Cassidy feel even better.
Back at Jensen’s, she flopped onto the couch, breathing out a sigh of relief.
“Well. That could have been better, but it could have been worse.”He grinned down at her sheepishly.“How are you feeling?”
“Relieved.Excited.”She giggled.
“Not pissed at Mick?”
“It wasn’t his fault.I shouldn’t have eaten a random brownie without asking.”She groaned.“Who eats brownies for breakfast?”
“He should have labeled them or something. If he leaves any more food around that has pot in it, I’ll make sure he puts something on it, so you know before eating.”Jensen patted the top of her head right as her phone rang.
Rolling over, Cassidy reached to the coffee table and picked it up.Kincaid’s name was on the screen, and she lit up.
“It’s Kincaid!”
“Okay, you get that, and I’ll go find Mick to yell at him.”
Cassidy grinned at him.Maybe she wouldn’t find it as funny later, but right now, she was really happy.Heck, maybe she should thank Mick.Brenda had been delighted that she was high.It might have even been what tipped the scales to her being hired.Cassidy shook her head as she lifted the phone to her ear.
Brenda was probably going to run her ragged, but she was looking forward to it.
“Hey, Kincaid! How are you?I was going to call you tonight!”
