“What’s going on?” Isaiah asked.
He’d heard Cami coming and barely had time to get up from his bed before his door flew open and she barreled toward him.
“There’s a ghost! In my room!”
She jumped up on him, wrapping her legs around his waist.
He didn’t move. It would take more than a little girl to knock him over. But it sure felt good having her in his arms. He squeezed her while gently rocking.
“Did you have a bad dream?” he asked in a soothing tone.
“No! It wasn’t a dream. It was… a ghost!”
He almost chuckled but didn’t want her thinking he was mocking her. She was just so cute, though! Too cute for her own good, maybe.
If she stayed in his room and in his arms for too long, she might be in for it…
Shoving such thoughts aside, he said, “Honey, it was probably just those scary animatronics that Stryker made.”
Cami shook her head. “I saw her! I saw a ghost lady. She was in the mirror behind me.”
He sat down and positioned Little Cami on his lap. “You know, one of those things is a lady. I bet you saw her in the mirror. But what were you doing up, anyway?”
She shuddered in his arms. Poor thing. He held her closer.
“I was up because someone whispered. I heard the lady before I saw her. But it wasn’t the thing Stryker made. This woman wasn’t actually scary looking. She smiled at me. Not menacing. Just… smiled.”
Isaiah’s mind went back to what they’d discovered at Cami’s mansion. There’d been a logical explanation for what she’d seen. Now the big question was who was behind it.
That couldn’t be the case here, though. Whoever was trying to scare Little Cami couldn’t pull their tricks inside the Guard’s mansion. There was no way anyone could break into that place undetected. Not with the security system they had in place.
Could it be Iris and Lana playing a trick on their friend? A Halloween prank was exactly the type of things Littles were known for.
But he doubted that was the case in this instance. They knew she was shaken up. A prank like that would just be mean now. And those two sweeties certainly weren’t the mean type.
“What did the woman say?” he inquired.
“Go to him.”
“Go to him?”
Cami nodded.
“Hmm. Presumably talking about me.” He held her a little closer. “I’d say this ghost has good advice. Come on, cutie. You’re sleeping in here tonight.”
An excited squeal told Isaiah that the edict was exactly what Cami was wanting. Though he didn’t think she’d made the whole thing up just to get in his bed.
Cami was honest. He could tell.
A Daddy knew his sweetie. Inside and out.
Once they were under the covers, he thought of moving far away to give her some space. But his heart wouldn’t let him do that. Neither would his arms.
He was holding her close before he knew it, trying his hardest not to let his hands wander.
It was going to be tough, he thought with a sigh.
Maybe one of the toughest things he’d ever done.
