She gave him a solemn nod. “You are vulnerable when you don’t set boundaries.”
“Did I jinx us earlier?” he asked, unaware the thought was still floating about in his mind.
“Jinx whom?”
Ethan recounted his conversation with Serena.
“Ah, yes. Well for one, spirits aren’t always around, so don’t assume we are lurking during your private moments. And as far as jinxes, Serena is right to caution you. Enjoy your time together. You never know where danger lurks.”
Before he could respond, she turned her back toward him and moved the direction she had come. Her dress flowed around her, making her look as if she glided across the floor.
“I must go,” she said over her shoulder. “Again, please do accept my apology and learn to set boundaries. Not all who wish to use you mean well.”
Later that night Serena, shook Ethan awake. “Ethan!”
Startled, he sat up and looked around the darkened room. Sweat covered him and slid down his neck. His heartbeat thundered in his ears as the organ thumped against his breastbone.
“E? Babe?” Serena asked.
He faced her and watched a muzzle shrink down until Serena’s pert nose remained. Dark knowing eyes shifted into familiar ones with thick lashes. Ethan shook his head, needing to free himself of the odd remnants of his dream.
He panted. “It was only a dream…”
Ethan lay back against his pillow, and Serena straddled his hips. “What happened?” she asked.
“I was in the woods. There were a bunch of wolves chasing me. They had beautiful coats and coloring, but it was awful. I’d run and run but there they were. One was larger than the others. His black coat was matted, and a strange line ran over its muzzle, and he scared me the most.”
Serena’s brows narrowed. “How did you know it was a male?”
Ethan looked past her ear in thought. “You know, it was this gut feeling.”
She nodded. “And the others?”
“Also male, but I didn’t feel like me. What? Why are you looking at me like that?”
Serena bit her lip. “I don’t think you were dreaming.”
