Mori
Moonscale Memorial Hospital
As soon as I walked into Moonscale Memorial Hospital with Preston doing his penguin waddle next to me, sirens blared above our heads.
Preston growled and claws came from his fingernails.
I would’ve turned around and walked straight out but we’d come to see Nic and since the ongoing crime spree circled around him, I’d have put good money on this emergency involving him too.
“You can wait in the car,” I shouted to my twin over the noise.
“Use the fucking link!” Preston’s bear snapped at me, and I flinched away.
“Wait in the car! I’ll find out what’s going on!” I switched to the link, letting his outburst slide because pregnant bears were not to be trifled with.
“I will not! If someone’s trying to hurt Nic, I’ll eat their Frost-damned faces off. I’m so tired of this shit. We’re still getting ice cream after we interview this guy,” Preston grumbled, hands squeezed tight over his ears. “I’m glad I left my drinks in the car, or I’d have run out of hands.”
I sniffed the air, trying to locate Clarence or Medwin.
I knew Medwin had attempted to question Nic this morning but by all reports he hadn’t gotten many answers.
I wasn’t here to get Nic or anyone else arrested.
I wanted to know more about the ghost cat capable of cutting body parts off shifters.
If a ghost cat was really roaming London, we all needed to know as much about it as we could.
“We’re not going to have to wait long to find out what’s happened,” Preston said, sniffing the air.
I sniffed too and caught the scent of blood.
“More than one blood. Two people? Three?” My wolf sniffed the air with me.
“We’re in a hospital,” I reminded both of them.
“Move!” someone growled, bowling her way through a group of guards trying to block the neck of the hallway.
The dragoness who barreled through with a cheetah head tucked under one arm and a beaver head clutched in the other stole my breath. She was the founder of Shiny Butt Cosmetics. She was Nic’s mom!
“Move, boys!” she said, not slowing down as her feet carried us towards her.
I pulled Preston into me and hit the wall. Preston slid down my front and clutched his belly. He roared, scratching at a guard who tried to pass us.
“My baby’s coming! My baby’s coming!” Preston roared again, holding his stomach with one arm and the guard’s leg with the other. “My baby! Help me!”
Panic shot through me and bounced around the group of confused guards. What was more important? Catching a murderer or helping a pregnant bear who had just gone into labor?
“Get him upstairs!” Clarence’s voice boomed over the crowd. “And you all go after her!”
Preston didn’t let go of the guard’s legs.
He’d grabbed onto the guard all the other guards looked to for what to do next.
Clarence bellowed to follow after the enraged dragoness, but I wasn’t so sure she was enraged.
I’d only met her a handful of times and she remembered me.
Or maybe she didn’t but had the empathy not to bowl over a pregnant man and his twin brother.
“Go! I’ve got them! They’re in a bloody hospital for the sake of Juda and all his little brats!” Clarence roared and the guard glanced to me as if I could make Preston let go of him.
“The rest of you go!” Clarence tossed his hands up in the air.
The others filed by and when the last one was gone Preston let the one he clung to go. He stretched out on the floor and blocked the doorway. Clarence muttered about sending the rest of the guards out the other exits, but I couldn’t concentrate on him. My brother was about to have his cub!
“Calm down, Mori,” Preston said over our twin link.
“Calm down because I’m not having the baby right now.
I just needed to buy her some time. They’ll look me over and say Braxton Hicks contractions.
If she took Jon’s head, it’s because he did something to Nic to deserve it.
I haven’t even met my baby yet and I’d kill over him.
I’d headbutt Frost himself in the nuts if that was the only way to save my baby. ”
What had I stumbled into and what had Preston picked up on that I missed? He’d met Jon. Well, sort of. He was hiding in the shadows when Jon tried to hire Crilus. He hadn’t liked the cheetah. As far as I knew Nic was the only one who ever had liked him.
Nurses helped Preston into a wheelchair, and he squeezed onto my hand for dear life as they wheeled him toward the elevator.
