The Other World
The apples sunk to the bottom of the baking dish and the vision dissolved.
For a long moment, neither Dern nor I spoke.
Did we just witness Sharon Claudis gaining an accomplice?
Would Annila really join whatever cause Sharon thought she had?
Is that why Dern showed me this? I knew better than to ask.
The old, dead bastard would never give me a straight answer.
He had plenty of bushes to beat around and plenty of time to beat around them.
I on the other hand, had a lot of irons in the fire.
“What do you think?” Dern asked after I was silent for longer than he liked.
“That’s what I was going to ask you. What am I supposed to gather from this?” I asked.
“How to use your critical thinking,” Dern said, leaning back in his chair and sipping his tea.
A mug sat empty in front of me. I learned my lesson the hard way about not drinking anything he offered. I still couldn’t tell Crilus and Pierce that their precious baby was a reincarnated tyrant.
“Why would you want to?” my wolf chimed into my thoughts. “She’s just a little baby now. Cute and cuddly and they love her.”
I rubbed my temples. Even my wolf was turning on me. Bad people didn’t change. They repeated their mistakes over and over. That’s the way it always was. Crilus and Pierce deserved a head’s up.
“You still with me?” Dern asked, knocking on the hardwood table. “I’m smelling smoke from the turning gears. but I don’t think you’re thinking critically yet.”
“When I agreed to this, I thought I’d be given clear cut assignments. I didn’t think I’d play whatever game this is.”
“You want to be a paranormal investigator, and you don’t want to investigate?” Dern asked.
“Sharon Claudis is alive. Lady Annila is alive.”
“Annila rhymes with vanilla,” Dern chuckled.
“Did you ever meet her?” I asked him.
“No, but we think alike. Sharon and I don’t, of course.
See, if I thought my grandkids needed help, I’d just have relocated.
I did a few times over the years. I’m not sure she thinks the baby needs help.
She’s out for something she wants. Annila is ensuring she cleans up the mess she sort of made to ensure her kid stays alive. ”
“But together…?”
“That’s yet to be seen. Though, there are plenty of clues there for you. Visions are one-time things. You should’ve taken notes,” he shrugged.
“You didn’t tell me to…”
“Yeah, and I don’t tell ya to wipe your ass either, but I assume that you do,” Dern growled.
“No, go on. Back you go. I’m done with your foolishness for one day.
I forgot how young you were. If it was up to me, I’d have recruited your carrier.
I don’t know that you’ve lived enough years to understand what’s going on here. ”
I growled and threw my hands up in the air ready to retort but the world turned black again.
“Mother fucker!” I grumbled as an elven guard patted my cheek to see if I was still alive or not.
