I almost wanted him to. I did as asked then picked up the shampoo and washed my hair. “Should I do yours?”
He ducked his head, and I ran my fingers through his messy strands, lathering him up while the conditioner worked on mine.
“This is the first decent shower I’ve had since I’d been out.” He let me guide him under the water to rinse the suds. “I had a cast on my leg for a long time. Then the bandage on my arm stopped me.”
“It must feel really good.”
I’d set myself up for that one.
His grin spread, and he ran his hands down to cup my ass. “It feels unbelievably good. I’m glad I waited. Gonna kiss you again.”
I nodded, not that he could see, and touched his face. Our mouths met once more. Kissing him should’ve been illegal. It was clearly addictive.
Against his lips, I said, “You should come with a warning label.”
“Caution, may cause dizziness, obsession, and spontaneous orgasms. And yet you keep reaching for me. What does that say about you?” He kissed me deeper. “What’s more dangerous to you, Mila? My dick or something else?”
“To be decided.”
“Say yes to what I’m asking.”
Only the pattering of the shower water filled the air, tension rising with the stress laced in his tone. I knew what he wanted. My next thirty days. More of this. Much more.
“We had a deal,” I murmured.
A phone buzzed in the room. Convict released a breath and pulled away from me. He left the shower to search the pile of clothes, extracting his phone.
I hustled to wrap myself in a towel, killing the water.
When he lifted his head, the lightness in his expression had gone. “Tyler says they’re coming back.”
I covered my mouth, the world rushing in where it had been held at bay. My fear for Kane hit doubly hard for having forgotten about him for a while.
“They have your guy. They’re bringing him in unharmed.”
Everything changed again, and I had to explain myself to the man I’d managed to get captured.
Chapter 19
Convict
We dressed quickly, and though I found a hairdryer for Mila, her impatience to get downstairs meant we left my room with her fair hair still half damp.
In the stairwell, Cassie was coming up as we descended, her boyfriend behind her. She grinned big and paused on the landing, eyeing Mila. “We just heard about the game. Congratulations. Ye know, your boy saved my life. Nearly at the cost of his own.”
Mila blinked at her. “It’s nice to meet you, and that’s good to know.”
If she was impressed, I couldn’t tell because we hurried on. I didn’t like that she’d gone quiet. I especially didn’t like the fact I had no clue who this Kane was to her. So far, everyone around her had been trying to hurt her. If he was some manipulative ex, I’d probably lose it.
On the main downstairs corridor between Divide and Divine, the crowd had thinned, and the clubs were closing, though the brothel upstairs never shut.
The office door was open ahead, with a woman peeking in the entrance, her jacket covered in embroidered flowers. Not a clubber. If she worked here, I couldn’t place her.
She pushed her long hair behind her ear and stepped inside. “Are you available for a chat?”
Shade replied. “Your old man too scared to see us now?”
The stranger exhaled a soft laugh. “Something like that.”
