Chapter Eight

Cal

I twirled the sharp blade in my hand, a habit I had when contemplating my life decisions. Or how best to kill my targets. Oh, Dezmandaro, what are you up to now? The tip of the blade sunk into the table in front of where Erin had just sat.

Erin Jay Williams. She was interesting, for a Lower Realms’ being. The way she trembled and squirmed beneath my stare was nothing new in my line of work and would serve her well to remember her place in this world.

I didn’t miss the resemblance she had to her, either.

I sat back in my chair, arms behind my head, staring at the empty chair before me. Dezmandaro was playing a dangerous game, one he wouldn’t win. He knew what happened when I was pushed too far. Did he send her to taunt me? To prove something?

Either way, it worked. And I would be a liar if Erin’s smart mouth and powerful will to protect her friend didn’t stir something within me.

Dezmandaro might have selected Erin because of the past, but I was more interested in what she would do in the future. Maybe a Lower Realms’ being could prove themself useful if it meant bringing Dez back to my side. Working together again.

I grinned for the first time in a long time.

If everything goes to plan and Erin follows through with my contract, there is no doubt Dez will kill her.
