Chapter Thirty-One

Cal

I warped to a stranger’s balcony overlooking New York City’s illuminated skyline. The scenery was nothing new as I lit a cigarette, taking a long drag as I watched Lower Realms’ beings go about their evening. They were like ants filing in and out of their colonies, lasting for brief moments in time before crumbling and starting anew. I wasn’t in any rush to complete the Council’s next assignment, but I needed a distraction. To get the fuck away from Erin lest I take and break her before she was ready.

Lend me your dagger, and I’ll give you anything you want.

Angelica had said something similar. Days before I killed her.

Love makes you do crazy things. Angelica and Dezmandaro were the definition of that. They deserved each other in that sense, but I got dragged into it. Let myself be dragged into it.

The past was repeating itself as if haunting me with my previous mistakes. Or wanting to watch and see if I’ll make the same ones. Except I didn’t think Erin wanted my dagger to try and kill me with it as Angelica had. She wasn’t that stupid nor obsessed with me like Angelica had been when I told her I wasn’t in love with her.

But I was slowly becoming more and more obsessed with Erin Jay Williams.

I tipped my head back and released a plume of smoke, letting it dissipate into the night. The air was brisk and refreshing against the parts of me that still burned after tonight’s events. Erin’s mouth on my cock had worked me up. I was far from done with her, the zipper of my jeans grinding painfully into my hardened length, but she wasn’t ready for all of me yet. As much as I wanted to drag her down in the pits of darkness, show her the reality of my world and all its brutal despair and pain, I had to take it slow.

I smothered the butt of my cigarette into the railing. A rare smile took hold of me; I was suddenly full of them these days.

It won’t be long before Erin won’t know anything else.
