Story: Checkmate
Endings are hard.
No one knew that better than those who had lived through an ending. But they also gave way to beautiful new beginnings if you let them.
Marcus and Erica welcomed their son, Jackson, into the world on New Year’s Eve at three minutes to midnight. Seventeen minutes after his birth, his sister, Addison, followed on New Year’s Day.
Wedding bells followed soon after. Both of them agreed that their engagement had been long enough. Now the twins had arrived, so they had no more excuses. They got married in an intimate ceremony and took a year off to enjoy their new family.
With business booming and TV opportunities up the wall, it wasn’t as though they needed the cash.
When it comes to happy endings, they had won the jackpot.
Not everyone was so lucky.
Alex and Sophie followed in the footsteps of their exes and got married. Their children were the only ones in attendance, but that didn’t matter.
They’d decided to stick it out until the bitter end. They were miserable and broke. Another kid was on the way, making their strained marriage even harder. The only things they had in common were sex and a love of their children.
Sophie had no choice but to find a job to support their growing family. This led her back to an office setting, answering the phones at a busy call centre.
The only benefit to this job was her floor manager.
Handsome and charming, he had caught her eye immediately. Before long, she took an interest in her appearance again and began working to get her figure back .
It was enough to make Alex sit up and take notice, but she didn’t care.
If only Shaun would take an interest in her, things would be better, she was sure.
After all, there had to be more out there for her than a dingy appointment and a disappointing husband.
Right?
Endings are hard.
Even the ones you see coming.
You don’t know me, and I’m sorry to be the one to tell you, but your wife is sleeping with my boss .
