“I know who you are. I just want to hear you say it.”
Bobbi moved toward the truck. She should have stayed closer and used it to shield herself. If she could get over to the open door, she could possibly use it to help her stay safe.
“Stay where you are,” Carson ordered.
Bobbi stopped. Years of training for moments like this flashed through her mind.Keep him talking.“Who do you think I am?”
“You’re a pig. I trusted you. I slept with you. You used me.”
“You think I’m a cop?”
“I know you’re a cop. I just want to hear you say it. The other day when you were late, you didn’t have a flat tire. You’d been arrested by that Forest Service pig. My informant told me you were in jail. You lied to me. You got out because you’re a cop. Now explain that to me.”
“I think you’re hearing things. Who told you that?”
“I have my sources. You know that,” Carson said.
Bobbi noticed that his hand had steadied. Her hand sat on her weapon. Once she pulled her gun, there was no going back. She had to shoot to kill. “Who’s your source?”
“You think I’m going to tell you that? Why did you lie to me?”
“I didn’t lie to you,” Bobbi said.
“Do you know anything about the explosion? Did you do it?”
“Why would I do that?” she asked.
“I don’t know. You pigs do crazy things.”
“I’m not a pig and I didn’t blow up the lab.”
“I don’t believe you. What about the sheriff? Did you use your resources to get him somewhere safe? We needed him and you knew that.”
“Look.” Bobbi put her hands back on her hips, close to her gun. “I don’t know what I have to say to convince you. I’m not a pig. I didn’t blow up your drug lab and I didn’t send the sheriff off to safety. What I do know is that I’ll get this load delivered while you go home and keep working on the business moves we’ve discussed. Lana’s guy is expecting me, not you. So let’s do this the right way and not mess anything up. We don’t need Lana asking more questions.”
Bobbi thought she saw Carson waver for a moment, but then a look of resolve crossed his face. “Give me your purse,” he said.
“What? Why?”
“You heard me. Give me your purse.”
“Fine.” She stepped, one foot after the other, to the truck, keeping her eyes on Carson. She didn’t want to turn her back on him.
Bobbi snatched her purse off the seat and threw it at Carson, and then she grabbed for her weapon.
Chapter Thirty-Four
Still irritated, Maya checked on Juniper in the patrol vehicle. She was curled up sleeping. Josh was waiting to walk with her, but Maya stomped toward the Black Bear Café, ignoring him. He didn’t need to be an ass.
Josh caught up to her, a patient look on his face and slight smile that only irritated Maya more.
She didn’t know if she should believe Sam. Josh had become a friend to her over this past week. He’d been there for her when she needed someone the most. She needed to find out more about Josh. Maybe he was only being friendly because he needed to get information out of her. Two could play that game.
“Let’s get our food to go and then head back to my office. It’s quieter. We can think and I have a whiteboard we can use to hash out our plan,” she said.
“Works for me.”
Maya and Josh ordered some burgers to go.
