Carson waited for her to make her way up the dirt road. She pulled up next to him and hopped out. Her shirt was unbuttoned to the point he could see her black-lace bra and some cleavage. He didn’t mind that, but Carson didn’t like the thought of another man being able to see his property.
“Where were you?” he asked.
“Sorry I was late. Had a flat tire.”
“Did you have to unbutton your shirt to change the tire?”
Bobbi’s face turned red and she quickly started to button the shirt back up. “Oops. I got hot changing the tire.”
“Is everything in the truck? You get everything okay?”
“Yes,” Bobbi said. “The delivery was right on time. Other than the flat tire, everything went fine.”
“Which one?”
“Which one what?”
“Which tire went flat?” Carson asked. “I don’t see any tires that have been changed.”
A glimpse of concern crossed Bobbi’s face.Is she lying?
“I already had it patched. Put the original tire back on,” Bobbi said.
Carson sauntered over to the truck. He tuned the radio to a certain station, put the pickup in neutral, making sure the parking brake was on, and cocked the steering wheel to the right. The hidden compartment with the codeine popped open. Bobbi fidgeted from one foot to the other.
“You going to help me?” Carson asked. What was wrong with her? She was lying and nervous, but why?
“Yeah.” Bobbi strode over to the truck and started helping Carson unload the drugs.
They worked in silence taking the codeine packages up to the new drug lab and placing the drugs in a gun safe. After they finished their work, Carson texted Jenna that she could start making the new batch anytime.
He closed the secret compartment on the truck. Bobbi’s silence bothered him. He would find out more about what she was doing.
If she was lying to him, he’d make her regret it.
Chapter Twenty-Nine
Arriving at her grandfather’s, Maya was relieved and happy to see Deputy Sam King. Maya hadn’t seen him since the night Doug died. As a good family friend, Sam would do everything he could to help her and Pops. She flew out of the car and ran up to him.
Sam gave her a big bear hug. “We’ll find him, Maya. I promise.”
“Thanks, Sam. Hopefully Juniper will help us.”
“I heard you were working K-9. Good for you.”
“Is Velvet okay?”
“I think so, but you know me, I’m not much of a horse person. If you check her over, I can get her put up. That way you and your wonder dog can start searching for your grandfather.”
Maya examined Velvet. There were no cuts, and the little mare didn’t appear hurt. Velvet rolled her eyes around, exposing some white. At times she reached out with a front leg and pawed the air, displaying unease.
“I think she’s fine, just needs to calm down,” Maya said.
“Good. I’ll be back to help when I’m done.”
Josh came over to Maya as Sam led Velvet away. “The deputies have stopped searching for now. I told them we would have Juniper do a track. They’ve set up a perimeter and will show you where they stopped and hopefully where the scent won’t be contaminated by them. You think Juniper is ready for this?”
“Yes.” Maya didn’t care if Juniper was ready or not. She had to find her grandfather and Juniper was their best chance of doing that.
