“ C ome in!” I yell from the courtesy of my comfortable couch.

“Hey, man,” Calvin says, entering my condo like he’s been here a million times, which he has.

It’s nice when your best friend lives a floor above you. It’s the main reason I moved to this building in the first place. I loved the location and building itself, plus it makes the commute to work easier and a lot more fun.

Cal helps himself to the kitchen and comes back with a drink in his hand. He joins me on the couch where I’m watching TV.

“What the hell are you watching?” he asks.

“Volleyball,” I state, a little annoyed. Clearly, it’s a volleyball game.

“How are you watching this?”

“I’m streaming it from CHU’s live stream,” I say, while keeping my eye on the game .

Annie is in Georgia for another invitational. They played Florida earlier and won, and now they are playing the host team, Georgia, and are down by two.

I grab my phone from the coffee table to text Annie.

“What are you doing?” Cal questions.

“I’m texting Annie and asking why she just took out her libero,” I say while pushing my thick fingers hard on my phone to text her. “Morgan has been on fire today, and it makes no sense to have zero liberos for this set. She should really reconsider this decision, don’t you think?”

“I’m sure she’s going to love that text,” he says sarcastically while grabbing my phone out of my hands.

“Hey!”

“You’ll thank me for this. Well, at least Annie will,” he says, dumping my phone in a drawer in my kitchen.

I hear him mumble, “Everybody’s a coach,” as he returns and sits down in the black leather recliner across from me.

We watch volleyball together in utter silence. I’m too focused on the game, anyway. At some point Cal orders us two pizzas for dinner. It’s a typical chill night for us.

“So, it’s going well with Annie, I take it?”

“Yup.”

“Cool, happy for you.”

“Thanks, man,” I say simply.

Cal and I hang out for the rest of the evening, and when he turns to go back upstairs, he opens a drawer and throws me my cell phone.

I look at my phone and notice a few missed texts from Annie, who was just asking about my day and telling me about her trip—all texts from a while ago .

Sebastian: Sorry. Cal hid my phone from me Annie: Do I want to know?

Sebastian: No, probably not Sebastian: I was watching your game earlier, and I had a few notes for you Annie: Uh-huh Annie: Tell Calvin I said thank you Sebastian: I will do no such thing.

It will go to his head Sebastian: and his head is big enough Annie: Like someone else, I know Sebastian: I don’t know, you haven’t seen it in a while.

Not sure how accurate your assessment would be Annie: That’s fair.

I’ll make sure to reassess when I see you Annie: Are we still on for Saturday? Sebastian: Yes *smiley face emoji*

I second-guess that smiley face emoji, but I am looking forward to Saturday. I want to text, “I can’t wait to see you,” but I’m not sure if that’s too much. Ah, well. I’ll send it, anyway. As soon as I hit send, Annie sends a text at the same time with the same message.

Annie: I can’t wait to see you.

A smile instantly hits my face. Great minds think alike.

Everything is going well with Annie so far.

I haven’t seen her in person since my football game over a week ago.

Our schedules never lined up during the week, and then we had an away game in Texas on Sunday.

Annie is now in Georgia this week for volleyball.

This week’s game is Thursday Night Football at home, which I’m not usually a fan of, but it opens my schedule up a little more for the weekend.

We have plans for Saturday, and it can’t come soon enough. I’m eager to spend time with her again, and this time I’ll be ready for anything.
