Chapter ten
Here Until Further Notice
Rafferty
Three days ago, I never thought I’d wake up next to Alexandra. The satisfaction it gave me almost scared me, because I’d never felt like this. Like starting every day next to Alexandra was where I was meant to be.
Dim sunlight came through her blinds. I watched Alexandra sleeping. Her beauty stopped me every time I saw her, but her relaxed features, unguarded in her sleep… it stole my breath and made me wonder why she bothered to put up with me. She was so gorgeous, she could have anyone she wanted.
She rolled over and her hand landed on my bicep.
Her eyes opened wide and she gasped. “Oh crap! What time is it? I’m running late. Did my alarm go off?”
I held her hand to my arm to keep her from bolting from the bed. “Your alarm hasn’t gone off yet. I woke up because of the sunlight.”
“Oh,” she said.
“Yeah. You aren’t freaking out for any other reason are you?”
Her brows drew together. “No.”
“Then do your thing and turn off your alarm.”
She nodded and swung her legs to the side of the bed and sat on the edge. I didn’t miss her sudden inhale.
“You sore?” I asked, feeling like a dumbass. Of course she was sore. I’d meant to tell her to take a bath after we were done last night, but I also didn’t want her getting caught up in her thoughts.
“Yeah.” She glanced over her shoulder at me. “Maybe I’m an idiot, but I figured it would go away by now.”
I sat up. “Tomorrow you should be good.”
Her head reared back. “Well, at least I should be able to… last longer this weekend.”
I sat up, shifted her hair to one side, and kissed her bare shoulder. “Thought I told you, but I’m here until further notice.”
“You are?”
“Yeah, at least until this break-in shit is resolved.”
She twisted and leaned toward me. This new position made me appreciate her skimpy, fire-engine red pajama set for a new reason. Red was sure as hell her color, but the top didn’t hug her figure and it gave me enough of a peek at her side-boob that my dick took notice.
“What are you talking about?” she asked.
I forced myself to focus on her hazel eyes, and I ran down my conversation with Cal.
She tipped her head back. “I swear it seems like I have less privacy here than I did back in Jacksonville.”
I wrapped my arms around her, fell to my back, and pulled her on top of me. “This is for your safety, Alexandra. He loves you and wants to protect you.”
A contrite expression stole over her face. “I know that. It isn’t his concern that bothers me, it’s the fact you had to tell him. Obviously, I should have called him, and I would have, but we—”
“Yeah, I’m not gonna make you go through that shit. Got news for you, Lex. I’m protective too, and I don’t give a damn if that bothers you.”
She bit her lower lip. “Can you let me tell him the next time something shitty happens?”
“No.”
Surprise filled her eyes. “What do you mean, ‘No’?”
“Exactly that. I tell Cal when something shitty happens to you this week, and it protects you. Keeps you from having to answer a bunch of questions and relive it. You want to talk to him about what happened, have at it… after you take your finals.”
She tilted her head back again, and spoke to the ceiling. “Oh, my God, you’re bossy!”
She had no idea how bossy I could be.
But her semi-outraged display turned me on, and with her tits in my face, I couldn’t fight the urge. I pulled down her low-cut pajama top to expose one of her breasts and I sucked a nipple into my mouth.
“Oh shit,” she moaned, her hands grabbing my neck. “Rafferty... I, we can’t.”
No, we really couldn’t, but that wasn’t going to stop me from having some fun. I kept at her tit and my free hand slid down to her sleep shorts and inside her panties.
“Raff! Seriously, we— Oh God, that feels good,” she said when my finger circled her clit.
Her pussy was wet and getting wetter the more I played with her. I let go of her tit and kissed my way up her chest, her neck, along her jaw, and took her lips.
She kissed me back and I rolled us over. I had to stop soon or this was going to go too far, but tomorrow couldn’t get here soon enough.
Her face twisted and she sighed… or maybe it was a quiet moan.
“Want me to make you come, baby?”
“Raff… I—”
Her alarm went off. More like, her radio went off at maximum volume. The college radio station news report was on, and that killed the mood.
“Shit,” I muttered, and gently slid my hand away from her pussy.
She hurried to the alarm and turned it off. For a moment, I did some deep breathing to get my dick under control. Then I turned so I could sit with my back to the headboard.
Alexandra stood in front of her dresser holding some clothes in the crook of her left arm. She pointed her right finger at me. “You have to go back to Jax, Raff. I’m all frazzled now.”
I grinned. “You come back to bed, and I’ll unfrazzle you.”
She tossed her free hand up in the air. “And then I won’t have time to get to my notes.”
“Baby, it’ll be fine. Try me.”
“You’re evil.”
I laughed. “Nah. I save evil for people who deserve it. I’ll give you exactly what you need so you aren’t distracted by how horny you are.”
She mulled it over for all of four seconds. “Hurry up, Rafferty. I never knew this about myself, but being this wound-up makes me cranky.”
“This will be fun,” I muttered.
We stood at the front door, kissing. Alexandra’s fingers skated out of my hair and down to my shoulders. I expected her to break the kiss, but she didn’t. In fact, she went up on her toes and gave everything right back to me.
My blood rushed south, and I fought against pressing her up against the front door. I pulled back from her kiss and watched her eyes slowly open.
She gave me a shy smile. “Sorry. I got carried away.”
“You never have to apologize for that, but we’re cutting it close. You want me to give you a ride to class?”
She shook her head. “No, we’ll end up making out in your truck or while standing next to your bike. This class is closer than my others, so I’m good to walk.”
“You’re sure?”
“Very,” she said with a nod.
“All right. I’ll see you when you get back.”
Her brows furrowed. “What are you going to do while I’m gone?”
I smiled. “Gonna chat with your building manager. Then I’m hitting Home Depot. I may not switch out your locks again, but I want you to have another set just in case. After that…maybe I’ll hit a grocery store so I can make you dinner.”
She twisted her lips to the side. “I’m pretty sure there’s a lie in there. That or else you’ve left something out. If you’re going to be running that many errands though, let me give you my key so you can lock up.”
She twisted her key off the ring and handed it to me.
I nodded. “Thanks. Not to rush you, but it’s seven-fifty-one, Lex. You better get moving.”
She gave me a quick peck on the lips. “Behave yourself. See you around noon.”
Once the door closed, I grabbed our coffee cups off the breakfast bar and rinsed them in the sink. Lex had my number. I had left something out earlier, which was a lie by omission, but since I wasn’t sure how to find Brantley, it might not have been a lie at all.
I planned to rummage through Ines’s room to see if I could find anything that might point me toward Brantley’s address. It was one helluva long shot, but it seemed like the only shot I had.
My phone rang, and I picked up from the counter, seeing Blood’s name on display.
“Hey, Blood.”
“Prospect. Cal says he wants you with Alexandra for a few days.”
“Yes, sir.”
“Did anything of hers get stolen in this break-in?”
“Not that she can tell. Her roommate isn’t here, but she didn’t think anything was taken from her room either.”
“Right. When is she coming back to Jacksonville?”
I sighed. “This weekend, maybe. She wasn’t planning on it at all… until yesterday.”
From the shift in Blood’s tone of voice, I could practically see the sinister smile on his face. “Yeah… I’m guessing that has something to do with you finally making your intentions clear with her.”
“I don’t know what you mean by ‘finally,’ but yeah, I have something to do with that.”
“You fuck with her, Cal won’t get a chance to teach you a lesson, because I’ll kill you.”
I took a deep breath, realizing why Lex found it overbearing when the brothers got so protective of her. “Yeah. If I do her wrong, I’ll deserve that.”
“Did you teach that asshole ex-boyfriend a lesson?”
My head wobbled as I thought about it. “I think so. He strikes me as the type who might have to learn the hard way… but he definitely understands that I’m not gonna take any shit from him.”
“Good. You need bail money, be sure to call me, not Cal.”
I nodded, a smile threatening. “Got it.”
“Keep us posted. I may send another brother down there.”
I had to bite back my knee-jerk reaction of asking him why. The brothers hated it when a prospect questioned them… to the point they did their damnedest to force a question out of us.
“If you insist,” I muttered.
“Is there a problem?”
“No,” I lied. I didn’t need one of the brothers coming down here. That would be too much, and it would freak out Alexandra.
“Good. I hate going to Gainesville, but if it appears that you need help, we’ll ride out.”
We said our goodbyes, and I found Alexandra’s charger. It was compatible with my phone, so I plugged it in to charge, and went to shower.
I had just rinsed the shampoo out of my hair when I thought I heard a noise through the spray pelting down on me. Then Alexandra’s dense bar of fancy soap fell off the shower caddy and hit the top of my foot.
“Sonuvabitch,” I hissed, picking up the sudsy brick.
The shower curtain whipped to the side and I straightened.
“Hey, baby…” Porter muttered, then stopped, realizing I wasn’t Alexandra.
I clenched a fist around the bar of soap and punched him in the face.
He yelled and put his hands to his nose. Dripping wet, I dropped the soap in the tub, stepped out of the shower, and rushed him out of the small bathroom.
