Page 13 of Bitten By Her
“I know it’s a complicated matter. Believe me, I know. But I want to help you if I can, Rachel. I’m still working on a few things, so I can’t tell you anything more. But please trust me when I say I would never put you or your father’s pack in danger.”
Rachel opened her mouth then shut it again, a traitorous flare of hope sparking inside. Words failed her, so she just nodded.
“I’ll see you bright and early Saturday morning, then.”
Taking that as a dismissal, Rachel stood, but Cam caught her hand before she could leave the room. He tugged her towards him and laid his hand at the base of her throat, and a sense of calm flowed through her, lips parting on a sigh.
“I know this is hard. But don’t build your hopes up too much. There’s no guarantee anything will come of this.”
Rachel tried to tamp down the growing excitement, but it was useless. “Too late.”
Cam touched his forehead to hers. “You don’t have to go, if that’d be easier.”
“No,” Rachel bit out. The thought of not going, no matter the outcome, was untenable. “I have to try.”
“You do.”
Rachel had no idea what Cam had planned, and probably the less she knew the better. But one thing she knew for certain.
I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t go.
