“I believe so. We can invite them over for dinner.”

“We?”

Bloody hell.

Did I just say that like we’re a couple planning double dates with our friends?

“Ican invite them over...”

She frowns and turns away from me to inspect some of my awards. Aside from the popcorn statue, I also have a People’s Choice and Critics’ Choice Award. She runs her fingertips over the nameplate of each one—over my name—as if not believing it’s real. That I’m real.

She leaves the bookcase to walk back to me, stopping a foot away... leaving distance between us.

I almost reach out to pull her closer. Almost.

“I accept the job.”

Oh, right. The job. I’ve been giving her the tour as if she already agreed.

“But these moments between us...” I hold my breath, waiting for her next words. “They need to stop. We need to reinforce the boundaries. Keep this… professional.”

“Right, yes, of course.”

My heart drops because even though I agree it’s what’s best, I’m selfish and would risk it all to have her.

“I really want to...”

“But?”

“I wouldn’t be able to stop, and I need this job and I think Adeline needs me, so I can’t risk that by... you know.”

“Right. Boundaries.”

“Boundaries,” she echoes.

“Good.”

“Great.”

We stare at each other, silently, as if waiting for the other to change their mind. When neither of us says another word, Savannah purses her lips.

I desperately want to fight her on this, but I won’t. I’d never push a woman to do something she doesn’t want to do. Or something she wants to do but can’t for whatever reason.

“Let me show you which room will be yours.”

She drops her shoulders. Disappointment flashes across her face, but she’s quick to plaster on a smile as I lead her out of the room.

I have a feeling this agreement of ours won’t last long.

I hope it doesn’t.
