CHAPTER THIRTY
THE THING GODDESSES FEAR
Kari
D id I really just admit I was hers?
My hair dripped onto the quilt I laid upon, and my skin rose with little goosebumps all the way to the exposed flesh of my hip. Rune stared down at me, her leathers covering far too much.
Always a tease. Always hiding from me.
Despite the leathers, she was armor-less, and while that cracked something apart deep inside me, right now, I only cared about what she was wearing, not what was missing.
The way her eyes blazed with heat, I knew she wasn’t going to waste this opportunity.
I wanted to tell her I wouldn’t change my mind, that this wasn’t just for the moment, but as she wet her lips and bowed her head, my mind went blank.
Whatever I was about to open my mouth to say was long gone.
Nothing else mattered in this moment outside of her hands trailing over her leathers to find their seams. I reached forward and gripped Rune’s forearm, pulling her closer so I could help her get out of what kept me from what I craved.
Piece by piece, I peeled the leather from her skin, revealing parts of her I’d never had the honor of exploring. Rune gasped as my cold hands found her warm flesh, and then she let out a low chuckle, like I was going to pay for that costly mistake.
My head dropped to the mattress as she hovered over me, feet still on the floor.
My fingers gripped the back of her head, and none of my gentleness from before remained as I pulled her in until her lips were on mine.
Our mouths moved in impatient synchronicity, and the taste of her had me groaning between our lips.
I wanted more—no, I needed it. Why was she not on this bed yet?
I tried to pull her up, but she just clicked her tongue and smirked down at me. A frustrated growl left my throat, and I all but whined her name.
“Not yet, seeress,” she hummed. “We have one last night in Hel, and if I get to have you in the underworld, I’m sure as fuck going to take my time.”
I cursed under my breath. “You’re going to torture me, aren’t you?”
“No, Kari.” She shook her head. “I’m going to worship you.”
I scoffed and gripped the remaining shreds of fabric clinging to her. “I’m no goddess.”
“You’re worse: you’re the thing goddesses fear.”
At that, I smiled. I wouldn’t pretend to be a goddess, but I could play at something the gods feared.
If Rune wanted me to be a predator, I wouldn’t hesitate.
My hands found the towel wrapped around me, and I slowly pulled it aside until I was bare to her.
I watched as desire flared in her eyes—now, she was the one cursing under her breath.
Rune’s fingers traced the scar left from the raider who’d struck me. That damned raider was the reason I was here, and I forced him out of my mind. I wasn’t about to thank that violent villain, but oh, had he done me a favor.
She trailed kisses over the scar and continued moving downward until her warm lips were on one of my peaked nipples.
She took one into her mouth, and I suppressed a groan as she playfully nipped at me.
The once-valkyrie wasn’t lying when she said she’d take her time.
She kissed and licked every part of my chest, stomach, and hips until I was begging her to move lower.
I didn’t want to push her head, but gods, if she didn’t get to the part of me that throbbed for her, I was going to lose my mind.
Rune chuckled against my skin, then pushed two fingers inside me.
I gasped as I tightened around her, shocked by the feeling after so many teasing kisses in all the wrong places.
She thrust in and out with long, languid strokes of her fingers.
Her skin warmed inside me, so when she slid back out and ran them over the apex of my thighs, her fingertips were hot against the most sensitive part of me.
At this rate, it wouldn’t take me long to fall apart for this woman, but who said you could only break once?
I groaned as I rocked against her, lifting my hips so I had more leverage.
Rune Dragomir was in my clutches, and, even if I wasn’t ready to admit it to anyone but myself, I would never let her go.
Rune pulled away, then dropped to her knees before me, like she really did plan to worship. I opened my mouth to protest, but she pulled my ass to the end of the bed and dipped her head to meet me.
Fuck.
She hummed praises against my sensitive skin, getting lost in her task before finally looking back up at me as if she were a damned fire demon.
“Rune?” I gasped.
“What is it, seeress?” she asked, “Can’t you see I’m busy feasting?”
I bit my bottom lip, so tempted to give in and let her finish me, but I wanted my pound of flesh, and she wasn’t even naked for me yet. How could I fall into that blissful state when she wouldn’t be right there with me, exposed and vulnerable?
“I want you,” I groaned when she resumed licking and sucking. “All of you.” I used her hair to pull her mouth off me. I kept her locked in my grasp, forcing her to look upon my face, because even though she kept distracting me, I was serious. “Now.”
“What did I say about patience?”
“I don’t know what that is,” I panted, scrambling back onto the mattress.
If she wanted me, she was going to have to join me, crawl to me here upon this bed.
Rune shook her head slowly, a smile playing at the corner of her mouth.
I thought she would refuse me yet again, but this time, she brought her hands up to the thin fabric covering her breasts and lifted it over her head.
Rune stood before me, chest exposed, her fingers tugging at the last remaining cloth on her perfect, olive skin.
She is the most glorious thing I’ve ever seen.
Valhalla didn’t compare. All the gold, all the wonder did not compare to this creature before me.
When she dropped the final scrap of fabric, bearing her last hidden spot, I lost it.
My own hand found my core, and I moved my fingers over myself to quench the need she pulled from me.
Rune watched my hand bob up and down as she crawled across the bed to where I was propped up against the pillows.
“You are temptation at its finest,” she said as she straddled me, pinning my hand between us. “I wanted you long before you knew me, but gods , I could’ve never imagined this. No figment of my mind could’ve been crafted in your image, because there’s nothing like you. No one like you.”
I swallowed, staring deeply into her eyes. What was there to say that would express how much Rune’s words meant to me? Any time I attempted to rein control over the situation, this woman threw me off my game once again.
With a bratty smirk, I hooked my ankles around hers and rolled us to the side. She leaned into the momentum, her slitted brow arched as I mounted her bare hips.
Running the back of my freed hand over her soft cheek, the wild beast bit me. Instead of pulling back, I slid two fingers into her mouth, and her eyes flared as she sucked them in deeper.
“You’ve always been mine, haven’t you?” I asked as I slipped a third finger between her beautiful lips. Rune nodded, unable to speak. With a smile, I freed her mouth.
My slick hand found that exquisite spot between her thighs, and I began torturing her in the slow, painful way she’d done to me. Rune pressed her head back into the pillow, her eyes closing.
“Hey, eyes on me,” I demanded. “You’re going to see the look on my face when you break for me, aren’t you?”
Rune’s eyes opened, and they locked fiercely on mine. I could see the strain in her, wanting so badly to get me on my back and take control once more, but I wasn’t done having fun just yet.
“Yes, seeress.” Her jaw tightened as she focused on keeping my gaze, and sweat beaded her brow.
I smirked as she gave in to me. I worked my hand faster until I felt her pulsing around my fingers, coming for me with a loud, breathy groan.
I barely had time to adjust before Rune’s hands were on me, and I found myself flat on my back once more.
A laugh slipped from my lips as she leaned in to kiss me.
“I’ve let you have your fun, your control, but you’re mine now. And I’m still hungry,” she growled against my lips. As she descended, my body went still, all but my racing heart. I whimpered and moaned as she devoured me, and I wondered why I hadn’t had to die to reach this perfect afterlife.
