“Half?” Alicia asked. “You had different mothers?”
“Yes,obviously. If you actually think I’m fully related to Crazy Kyle, you’re a terrible cop.” Sierra crossed her arms and pouted.
“O-okay. Uh…” She shifted her eyes back to Grant.
“Sierra’s a little dramatic,” Grant said with a smile. “We’re just…normal folks. Very family oriented.”
“So, my sister is your…third wife?”
Grant frowned and swallowed hard. “Uh, my fifth wife.”
Alicia shifted in her seat. “Fifth? I can see why you went the route you went. That may be the best way to get one to stick with you.”
Grant tried to fluff off the biting remark that hit all too close to home. “I have made some mistakes in my past. And I’m willing to admit that.”
“Well, at least four of them,” Alicia said with a laugh.
Grant shifted in his seat.
“Actually, five,” Sierra said. “Kyle’s mom wasn’t a wife. But she sure was a mistake.”
“Hey,” Kyle warned.
“That’s enough, Sierra.” Grant dug his phone from his pocket and glanced at it. “Looks like Julia may have lost track of time.”
He quickly typed a text to her, reminding her of lunch and asking her not to abandon them with her sister.
“Oh, I’m sure she’ll be along any minute. So, seems you live a pretty interesting life.”
“Not really. We–”
“Yoo-hoo!”
Grant’s eyes went wide, and his heart stopped as he recognized the shrill voice. His blood ran cold as he twisted to spot Lydia coming across the lawn.
She offered a cheery wave.
“Mom?” Sierra asked, her voice incredulous.
“Well, I hope there’s room for little old me at this table.”
“Who are you?” Alicia asked.
Lydia grinned at her. “Hi, I’m Lydia Harrington. Grant’s wife.”
Alicia screwed up her face. “What?”
Lydia skirted toward the woman and sank into the empty seat next to Grant.
“My first wife,” Grant corrected. “Sometimes Lydia gets confused.”
“Oh,” Lydia said with a pat of his hand. “Not true. But it does seem I got confused about the dates of this little trip. But at least I made it. Here we are. One big happy family.” She glanced around the table. “Oh, oops, we’re missing one. Where’s Miss Goody Two-Shoes?”
Alicia’s features took on an incredulous glance. “Are you referring to my sister?”
Lydia swiveled her head toward the other blonde. “Are you Julia’s sister?”
“Yeah,” Alicia answered.
