She studied his stormy eyes, they seemed to hold a mix of emotions, some of which she couldn’t identify. But he had such a forlorn look that she hesitated before she said anything more.
Maybe he didn’t want to hear this from her. Maybe he preferred that they go their separate ways.
She pressed her lips together as she tried to form the words.
He sighed, refusing to look at her after a moment. “Julia, I think I know what you’re going to say, and you’re right. I’m not sure I want to hear it.”
Her shoulders slumped at his words. She wondered if he’d been on board with the plan for Kyle to break into her sister’shouse. She couldn’t imagine he was, which would make this all the harder. “I know, but I really think we need to discuss it. I don’t want to just do this without you being on board.”
He offered her an incredulous glance. “Julia, I don’t think I could ever be on board with this.”
Her stomach twisted as she realized he likely wouldn’t be. But they were stuck in one place without moving forward; they both needed to accept this, no matter how hard it was.
“I know. I’m sorry, but…I think this is the best way to move forward.”
Grant flicked his gaze away from her to the rolling waves as they lapped at the rocks below. “Julia…”
“It won’t be that bad.”
He scoffed at the statement.
“It won’t. Come on, Grant. I know you don’t like him–”
“Understatement,” he interrupted.
“But you have to admit he thinks outside of the box. I think he can be really helpful.”
Grant furrowed his brow, glancing at her with confusion etched in every line of his face. “What? Wait, what are we talking about?”
Julia narrowed her eyes at him. “What do you think we’re talking about?”
“You asking me to cancel the rest of our contract because you’re not coming home–but Julia, we need you there. DG Industries is still a huge threat.”
Julia knitted her brows as she tried to parse through the statement. Did he really think that? “What? Why would I do that?”
He offered her a wide-eyed glance. “Julia, you filed a restraining order against me. What else could I think?”
Her jaw unhinged at the words. “Kyle didn’t tell you?”
“Tell me what?”
“I never filed a restraining order. My sister did that without my knowledge.”
His features registered shock, the tension finally easing a little in his jaw. “You never…”
“No. I had no idea she did that or told you that you couldn’t see me anymore. And they told me my phone wasn’t working, so I had no idea any of this was going on until Kyle told me.”
He breathed out a sigh as he scrubbed his face. “Wait, how did Kyle talk to you if you didn’t have your phone?
She slid her gaze sideways to him, her features scrunching. “He came to the house.”
“And they let him in?”
“Not exactly.”
Grant offered her a questioning gaze, his eyes guarded as though he didn’t actually want to hear it.
“He broke in at one in the morning.”
