“Something forces itself into my mind,” he blurts out.
Touch him,one being of light flutters around me.
What? And that’s supposed to help?
You are his mate, aren’t you?
I sit closer to Elden, before grabbing his head between my hands and leaning my forehead against his. He is my mate; my mate! I love him! “I’m here,” I say quietly. “I love you.”
I feel the light fluttering around me first, before branching out towards Elden, engulfing him in their warmth. Is this what I can do?I ask.
Oneof the things you can do,one of the beings answers. We are yours. To protect you and follow you, at your command.
Elden’s breath calms down and I can feel him relax against my touch. “The headache’s gone,” he mutters. “Whatever you did, thank you.”
“Did you talk with Samuel about it?” I ask him.
“No, but with Geneva,” he says. “She said it’s my gift coming through. If only I knew what it was and what it asks of me. If only I understood what’s going on.”
“We’ll figure it out,” I promise. “It’s probably an amazing, kickass gift once it awakens and will be the coolest thing ever!”
“You and your never-ending optimism,” he says, amused.
“Well, someone in this relationship has to be the optimist,” I grin.
“True.” He takes my hand, looking flustered all of a sudden. “I love you too, just in case that wasn’t obvious.”
“Grandma,” I yell while storming into our cottage. I don’t find her in the living room or the kitchen. “Grandma?” I mutter, anxiety filling me every time I don’t know where she is.
“I am here, sweetheart,” her voice reaches me from the upper floor. I hurry upstairs and peek into her bedroom.
“I’m sorry,” I say. “You were sleeping?”
“I just felt a bit tired.” She turns to the side and smiles at me. “Your grandma isn’t the youngest anymore, you know?”
“But you are young at heart,” I say. “And only as old as you feel you are.”
“What kind of fool said that?” she chuckles, while making space for me on the bed.
“You,” I giggle.
I lie down next to her, eyeing the ceiling and still reeling in the aftermath of my afternoon with Elden.
“You smell like the forest,” she says. “And like water.”
“Elden and Regis took me on a run,” I say, turning to the side and facing Grandma. “We went swimming.”
She smiles. “I assume you had a lovely afternoon?”
“He said he loves me,” I say, barely able to stop the big grin from spreading on my face. I sit up, brushing my hair off my face and squeal. “Grandma, he loves me!”
“Of course, he does!” She smiles happily and sits up as well. “I know the way he looks at you. Isn’t it beautiful to know he loves you, before the mate bond kicks in fully? These feelings are true and real.”
“I know,” I beam.
“I’m so glad he turned into such a good young man,” she says.
“He was worried about turning into his father,” I admit. “I told him it’s silly.”
