“Uh huh.” I just watch her pace around and babble, smiling fondly at her.
She turns around to face me and deflates.
“You’re just humoring me.”
I stare at her with an open gaze. “Humoring you? Never.”
She pouts. “I just think it’ll be kind of fun. Staking out my own business. There are only so many people it can be, anyway.”
“I’m sure we’ll find out. Tonight.”
“When should we start? Midnight?”
I look down at the spreadsheet.
Whoever is going into the records hall doesn’t want to be seen. All entry records are between one and five in the morning, after the night security guard leaves and before the morning one shows.
“Sounds like a plan.”
I can’t seem to stop smiling the rest of the workday. It’s stupid, really. I should want to keep this from her, stop her worrying so much.
But opening up to her, letting her in on everything going on—it really makes me feel better. Like there’s not such a weight on my shoulders.
I head for the gym after work, making the most of my free time.
By the time I’m done, I’m sweaty and feeling motivated to find whoever is trying to mess up Carter Holdings.
Not to mention, excited to see Olivia outside of work again.
It’s not like I intend to jump her bones the moment we’re alone together, but I can’t deny I’m hoping some extracurricular activities happen during the stakeout.
I pick up Olivia at fifteen to midnight and when I catch sight of her black, skin-tight bodysuit I almost choke on air.
Her hair is slicked back in a high ponytail and she grins at me when she gets into the car.
“Like my spy fit?”
I bark out a laugh. “Of course, I do. What am I, blind?”
She giggles, throwing her head back. She seems to be in a great mood, which is good news, since I haven’t heard much from her in a couple of weeks.
We both get so busy at work that we barely see each other, and I’ve missed her.
When we arrive at the office, I park in the shadows, hoping that whoever is coming won’t notice. There are several cars parked around the area, mostly from the night shift.
Olivia promptly puts her feet up on the dashboard, pulling out a bag of the noisiest chips ever.
I chuckle. “Good thing no one can hear us.”
She munches on the chips, humming in the back of her throat. “I’m eating for two, you know.”
I steal a couple of her chips, staring at the empty hallway that contains all the company’s records going back until the day the doors opened.
The only people that have access to it are my direct employees, and I know all of them fairly well. I can’t imagine it's someone from our office.
My hope is that it’s someone from Titan who stole the key code.
Crunch, crunch, crunch.
