“I will look into it,” Val offers. “We do have Night’s picture now. Maybe he resembled his father. I will reach out to the packs in France and see if they ever had a particularly intelligent sentinel. If this doesn’t help, I will expand my search further to other European packs.”
“We believe he is European?” Eric asks.
“I do,” I say. “He is way too accustomed to our ways. Judging by how well he knows this land, I’d say he is either French or migrated here when he was really young.”
“Thank you, Valerie,” Eric says into the phone. “This is a great help.”
We are about to bid our goodbyes when Val interrupts us. “Wait a moment before you hang up. Leila is on the other line,” she mutters before muting us for a moment.
“Leila?” Eric asks. “Then, she had to have a vision!”
“Please let it be something good,” I mutter.
“Has it ever been something good?” Aurelia asks.
I look at her. “Not really,” I admit.
“Guys,” Val blurts out, startling us. “Fuck, fuck, fuck!”
Valerie cursing is rare and not a good sign. “What happened?” Eric asks, anxiety in his voice.
“Leila had a vision. It’s not good, not good at all. She saw Léna and Coralie.”
Chapter forty-two
Something Personal
*LÉNA*
Iam running late for my date with Vander, but I just wanted to grab that figurine I saw the other day. It’s a limited edition, and I know he will love it. Vander is my first boyfriend, and I know it’s stupid of me to fall head over heels for him. We don’t even know if we’ll be mates, and chances are high we’ll get hurt, but I just want to indulge in this dream for now.
He is not just hot, but he is also so kind and funny. All the girls like him, which made me stay away from him. But when we met during an online game, I realized how cute he is. He actually listens to what I say and finds me interesting.
Boys usually don’t pay me attention, but he did.
I rub my cheeks, feeling how I start blushing when I think about my first time with him on New Year’s Eve. Way to start thenew year, Léna, with a great boyfriend and lots of plans for the next school year.
I store the figurine in my backpack, grabbing my phone while I walk out through a side entrance. I unlock my phone screen, skimming through my messages. Vander has sent me a little gift item through the online game we play together. He is the cutest.
He makes me feel pretty and lovable. No other guy did that.
I make sure to start typing a reply, thinking about which item to transfer to him. Something cool, something he can maybe use in-game. I’m so engrossed in what I’m doing that I don’t see or hear anyone approaching me until someone knocks into me, making me drop my phone. I look up, about to mutter an apology, when I look into eyes so cold they take my breath away.
“Hello there,” the man in front of me sneers. “Léna, is it?”
“Who wants to know that?” I ask, taking a careful step backwards. I shift my gaze around, noticing I’m all alone. Fuck, why did I not pay attention to where I was going to?
The man tilts his head to the side. “But my,” he chuckles darkly, “did you forget we have an appointment?”
I startle, completely dumbfounded. “What? We didn’t—”
I don’t manage to finish my sentence as someone grabs me from behind, pressing something against my nose until I feel my consciousness slipping away.
“Not bad.” I hear the guy mutter while I’m drifting away. “But nothing like my Azurite.”
“HEY!” a familiar female voice yells, though I’m have difficulty putting my finger on who. “Let her go!” Someone tugs at the arm holding me. “What are you doing here? Let her go!?”
“Interesting,” the man sneers. “We were coming for you next, anyway.”
