Chapter forty-two
Baird
B aird drove Mira to the Goldsmiths’ Guild in silence.
She hadn’t spoken a word the entire ride.
He guessed her mind was still reeling—trying to make sense of everything he’d told her over the past two days.
The impossible questions colliding with the new things she could see.
The deep knowing he kept telling her to trust, not shy away from.
When they reached the front of the building, Mira climbed out without a word and retrieved her tote bag from the back seat.
“I’ll be nearby,” he said gently. “But if ye need me…just call.”
Just before Mira shut her door, she poked her head back in. “Bunny…she’s just a regular dog? Not a— you know ?”
Baird blinked, caught off guard. “Regular dog? Ye mean— Auch . I don’t think vampire dogs are a thing, Mira,” he said, rolling his eyes.
“Hey, I didn’t think vampires of any kind were real a couple of days ago, so pardon me for asking a ‘stupid’ question!
” she snapped as the door slammed shut behind her.
The surprise on her face said she hadn’t meant to close it that hard.
“Asshole,” she muttered under her breath, glancing around to see if anyone had overheard .
The window rolled down with an electric hum. “Quite all right, lass. There are no stupid questions here…and why do I love it so when ye curse?” Baird said, smug as ever.
“Don’t do that!” she barked. “That thing you do with the corner of your mouth.”
He was glad to see she was regaining her moxie.
He gave her the look again— that look—and this time added a wink. “I was going to play dumb, but I won’t insult your intelligence, Mira. I know exactly what that smile does to ye.”
And he smirked again.
“How am I supposed to get any work done today?” she muttered before she walked off into the building.
