Story: Until I Break
“What?!” Cassidy squeals. “Oh my God! This is amazing!”
“Come on!” Gunner says happily. He opens his door and pulls me out of the car. Oscar picks me up in a hug and spins us around.
“Put me down!” I laugh.
“Now we just need to knock up Cassidy,” Oscar says, sitting me down and kissing me.
“We are both late, so she might be,” I say, but I think only Oscar heard me.
“Be prepared for her to be in denial until it pops out,” Oscar laughs.
When Oscar pulls away, Jasper cups my face and turns me to face him. He is who I am worried about losing. “Why are you looking at me like I just stomped on a puppy?” Jasper asks me.
“I’m sorry,” I say as tears well up.
“For what?”
“I know you’ve already had kids. You don’t have to be a part…”
“Stop right there,” Jasper says. “Eliza, baby. We all knew that you and Cassidy were not on birth control. We all know where babies come from. If I wasn’t okay with the possibility, I would have worn a condom. I am not upset, I am not mad, and I am sure as fuck not going anywhere.”
“What about Kimmy and Gina?” I ask cautiously.
“Oh, you mean the two women who are probably already thinking about buying baby shit? Yeah, I think they will be okay,” he says, and both Kimmy and Gina laugh. “When did you find out?”
“I kinda already knew, but they emailed me today. Apparently, they called and left Julian a message thinking the phone was mine,” I say as Gunner hands him my phone. Kimmy and Gina peek around him to look, and Kimmy’s eyes go wide. “What? What’s wrong? Is something wrong?”
“Are you sure you gave them the right information for last period and such?” Gina asks.
“Yeah. I have an app. Why?”
“Your hCG is on the higher side for ten weeks,” Kimmy tells me. “It is fine, but it could be a sign of twins.”
“Fuck yeah!” Gunner and Collin say as they high five each other.
“They really like babies,” Oscar laughs.
“Maybe one day I can add to the baby pile,” Cassidy says.
“Girl, our periods are in sync. You are just as late as me. You should take a test,” I say.
“Fuck, that would be amazing!” Collin says. “Hey, you could both have twins!”
“Don’t get your hopes up,” Cassidy says simply. I know she is afraid that after the abortions so young, she might not be able to have a baby, but I know she wants one.
“I’ll get her one,” Oscar says, nudging her. She sighs and lets him hug her. When she relaxes, she smiles at me.
“I’m really happy for you, Liz. Really.”
“I just want to point out that last night you were both crying while watching that weird commercial.” Jasper says.
“Yeah, yeah,” Cassidy says, waving him off.
“Let’s go eat,” I say, taking the attention off Cassidy.
“Let’s go, Mama. You are eating for three tonight!” Gunner says, smacking my ass so hard that the people across the parking lot turn around and look at us when I yelp.
“Ass,” I laugh and smack his arm.
“Come on!” Gunner says happily. He opens his door and pulls me out of the car. Oscar picks me up in a hug and spins us around.
