Story: Until I Break
“Uhhh… Yeah… I’m ten weeks,” she says, glancing at me.
“Baby, you left one of the tests in the bathroom last week,” I say, and a shy smile breaks out across her face.
“I will add that so they can check on the baby then,” she says with a smile.

When we got tothe hospital, they checked me over to make sure I was really okay before letting me go to the others. I have been in the waiting room for about thirty minutes now. When the door comes open and a doctor walks in, everyone is on their feet.
“Family for Downing?” he asks.
“Yes. That’s us,” Julian says.
“Okay, Eliza is stable and awake now. We wanted to get her settled before we came to talk to you all,” he says. “She sustained massive blood loss from an artery being nicked. I repaired the damage, which was minimal, and removed the bullet. She will be here for a few days, but she is okay.”
“Is she… How’s the baby? She’s ten weeks pregnant,” Julian says.
“We actually have a scan ordered,” he says.
“I am supposed to have a scan done also before I leave… Can those be done together?” I ask, and everyone gasps.
“Fuck yeah!” Gunner says proudly, making us laugh.
“I was going to ask you privately. Your doctor transferred your information over to me since you were coming over here to be with Eliza,” he says.
“Yeah. I signed… something,” I say.
“Let’s take you all back to see her, and I’ll let you tell her about your scan. I don’t think she knows you were a patient yet…” he tells me.
“Okay. Thank you so much,” I say.
“When she gets home, she will need lots of rest,” he tells us all.
“Can the dogs go back?” Gina asks, gesturing to Jack and Jill, who are lying on the floor. “Jack is Eliza’s service dog and Jill is Cassidy’s.”
“Of course. She is in a regular room and not ICU,” he says. “I’ll walk you guys back there.”
I take Jill’s leash, and she pops up and walks beside me. When we get into Eliza’s room, she smiles brightly at us. “I’m high,” she informs us. “Oh, doggy! Hi, Jacky-Poo! Jilly! You are here too!”
“What did you give her, doc?” Collin asks.
“Hey,” Julian says tearfully as he sits beside her.
“You saved me. I remember,” Eliza says sweetly. “I mean… kinda. I remember knowing I was dying… but then I didn’t… Now I’m here.”
“Calder helped,” Julian says.
“Now I’ve been in four of your holes,” Calder says, making her giggle. He leans down and kisses her. Before kissing Julian. “I’m glad you are okay, baby.”
“Me too…”
Oscar, Gunner, Collin, Ryan, Jasper, Kimmy, and Gina give her a kiss or gentle hug before Julian kisses her and stands so I can take his spot.
“You changed,” she murmurs. “Why are you in scrubs?”
“So… In the chaos of you getting shot, Jason got to me,” I say.
