“You’ve turned me into a schoolboy again. I’m all nerves and not-smooth moves.”
“And you’ve got me giggling like I never have before—not even as a schoolgirl.”
“That just means it’s meant to be.”
Madi felt lost for words and snuggled deeper into Beckett’s side, loving how secure she felt in his arms. Thinking back over the things he said, she remembered meeting him that day in the conference room. How his commanding presence drew her in. The way he so easily managed to tame the fussy lawyers and get her alone to see what she wanted and needed. His kindness had been as attractive as his piercing blue eyes and strong jaw.
She thought of Beckett as he had been just an hour or so ago, sitting on the couch with Becka curled in his lap as he read her a board book, making voices for all the animals. Never in a million years would she have guessed that he could be so tender. Every time she caught him being sweet with Becka, she fell a little harder and a little farther. His honesty tonight had wiped away all—okay, most—of her negative feelings about his past.
He pressed his lips against her temple. She closed her eyes, both wishing she could freeze time to savor that moment and fast forward to him pressing his lips to hers.
It might simply take some time to move past the idea that he dated Calista, however shallow their relationship had been. She might always come up against her sister’s memory and her own insecurities. But after hearing his story and his declarations, Madi felt sure he was worth it.
