Story: Pretty Secrets
“She doesn’t know,” another speaks up, followed by a cruel laugh.
“Leo?” I shudder.
A chorus of laughter rings all around me. Terror sweeps me up and stars dance on the other side of my eyelids when I understand the truth. I feel myself getting queasier and queasier. I might pass out from all the blood rushing to my head and the knowledge that I’ve been played.
Oliver was right. Leo is one of them. I’d call out for Alaric, but he wouldn’t help either. He might even be in one of those long robes, hiding his face behind his hood like the coward he is.
They’re Knights, and Knights are emotionless and powerful—a horrible mix for rich people.
I’m going to die. Just like Dee.
I take in a deep breath, close my eyes again, and try to center myself as much as possible. If they’re going to kill me, I’m not giving them the satisfaction of terrifying me.
“What? Nothing more to say?” a voice teases. “No one left to call for help. No one who cares to, anyway.”
“You’re all alone,” another voice taunts. “You’ve been there for hours. Your muscles are hurting like hell. Your heart is beating like crazy. Do you see that river below you, Astor? It’s so cold that your body will seize up. There’ll be no swimming. No last frantic push to the surface.”
“You’ll die. Just like your sister.”
My heart splinters. The shards become weapons, tearing up my insides.
Someone scoffs. “She got it easier than her sister. But I have to admit, they both makepretty little dead girls.”
The rope unravels with a whine, and I plunge into the icy depths of the Saint Lawrence River.
Just as they promised, my body seizes. I gasp into the pitch black, river water seizing my lungs.
And there’s nothing I can do about it.
The Knights have won again, but at least I’ll get to see Dee soon…
