Story: Not In The Proposal
I gasped as the realization hit me.
“She said yes!” Elliot giggled, her eyes bright with joy.
The whole table erupted in cheers, no doubt scaring the hell out of everyone else trying to enjoy their time at the restaurant.
“No fucking way!” Taylor cried, reaching all the way across the table and grabbing both Cam’s and Elliot’s hands to inspect their rings. “You’re engaged?!”
“Yes!” Elliot squealed, turning her starry-eyed gaze back to Cameron who was already looking at her. “I was a little scared, to be honest.”
“Well, tell us how it went!” Alex insisted. Taylor waved down the nearest waiter and ordered a bottle of champagne for the table. “What happened, when did it happen, how long have you been planning this?”
Cameron sat back with a quiet chuckle, her free hand slipping below the table to rest on Elliot’s thigh.
“It was all rushed,” Elliot said, a small frown tugging at her lips. “I’d been planning it for weeks, but I had no idea what the hell I was going to do. She already has everything, you know?”
“But you had so many ideas,” Hayden teased, her arm resting along the back of Frankie’s chair.
“Yeah, but I didn’t know which of them Cam would like,” Elliot argued.
“Okay, but what did you end up doing?” Alex pressed, her impatience palpable.
“She took me to the arcade.” Cameron chuckled.
A beat of silence passed around the table.
“That’s so geeky,” I mumbled.
“It was adorable,” Cameron corrected with a wide smile. “She kicked my ass at literally all the games and while we were grabbing lunch at the food court, she proposed.”
“That sounds about right.” I chuckled, winking at Elliot. She and I had bonded a little over our mutual love of gaming, and I had a bit of a soft spot for her.
Especially after she managed to break down the Walls of Cameron.
“When is the wedding?” Frankie asked, leaning forward excitedly. ”We need to get started on gifts and everything else!”
“We haven’t set a date just yet,” Elliot said, turning back to Cameron for a moment. “But we’re thinking maybe late autumn?”
“Yeah, I’m not really a fan of winter weddings.” Hayden nodded in agreement. “And summer is just an awful time of year in general.”
“Hear hear,” I agreed.
“I think summer weddings are gorgeous,” Alex argued, while Taylor shook her head.
“Winter weddings are the best,” she insisted. “You don’t have to worry about sweating through your makeup or staining your clothes. Plus winter is just perfect all around.”
“Well then, it’s a good thing you’re not the ones getting married,” Cameron said sweetly, her eyes turning mocking.
“Oh, damn, I need to go to the restroom,” Elliot said suddenly, getting up from the table and disappearing toward the ladies’ room.
I turned knowing eyes on Cameron.
“You’d let her set the date whenever she wanted,” I teased, and Cameron shrugged.
“To be fair, I’ve already done the big white wedding,” she explained. “I just want her to be happy.”
Hayden cooed, drawing everyone else’s attention.
“And you?” Alex prompted.
