“Like what?” Krissy asked.

“Like, ‘OMG, my boo is now the deputy chief of the CFD! So happy!’ And then you include a gif of that chick from Seinfeld doing a happy dance.”

Krissy sucked her teeth.

“First of all, I would not use ‘boo’ to describe you because I’m not a teenager from the early 2000s. Secondly, I would use the gif of that chick from Friends doing a happy dance.”

“Whatever! Just don’t go blabbing about this yet. There’s a certain protocol that has to be followed.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” Krissy said. “The fire department has a bunch of rules becau

se they’re all uptight about everything. I promise I won’t tell. Now, where do you want to go to celebrate?”

“Hm…I don’t know,” Becca said, and Krissy could almost hear her shrugging. “We could go to Roosevelt Pizza, I guess.”

Krissy rolled her eyes.

“This is why you’re lucky I’m your girlfriend!” she exclaimed. “Roosevelt Pizza is for celebrating getting paroled. We are going someplace spectacular, okay? It’s not everyday you become the next in line for the presidency of the Carlsbad Fire Department.”

“It’s the deputy chief—”

“Aargh! You know what I mean! Leave everything to me. So, what are you going to do all day besides choose which fabulous dress you’re going to wear when we go out tonight?”

“Maybe shop for a fabulous dress I’m going to wear when we go out tonight,” Becca answered.

“No fair!” Krissy said. “I want to go shopping too.”

“Look at it this way,” Becca began, “if you don’t go shopping with me, you get to be surprised when you come pick me up to take me out.”

Krissy smiled.

“I can deal with that,” she said.

“Because I’m assuming that going out to celebrate in a Jeep is also something that’s only done for getting paroled, right?”

“Your Jeep is actually super sexy,” Krissy said. “I also can’t wait to have sex in it. Trust me, I’ve thought about that a billion times.”

Becca laughed.

“Is that right?”

“Mm-hm,” Krissy hummed. “Parked somewhere public, you know? The side of the highway or on Carlsbad Village Drive on a Saturday night. My favorite is in the parking lot of a Catholic church on Sunday morning. I like the idea of screaming ‘Oh god!’ as I have an orgasm outside a place that prefers people like us didn’t exist.”
