Story: Matched with Her Fake Fiance
But how long will this last without a contract?
CHAPTER18
Dani
Sleep is the only thing I want to think about right now. After a long night in the ER, I don’t want to do much of anything.
We had to sit for at least two hours before Jack was seen by a doctor and then another two before he was finally released.
The part of the event we’d been to had been fun. Okay, I don’t know if I’d term it fun. Interesting is a better explanation.
Nothing like meeting my fake boyfr—l mean, fiancé’s ex-girlfriend in a crowded room. At an event I’d been nervous about anyway. And then he’d changed out the status of our relationship as though she’d thrown down the challenge gauntlet to get him back.
I need to ask him about her, about their entire relationship and dynamic so I can be ready for next time. Because if anything, we’ll probably be running into her again. It was just late last night, and my mind was stuck on the fact we were in a hospital. That made it hard to think straight and have any conversations at all.
My bedroom door opens, and I turn to see Kenzie and Evie standing there, looking curious.
“What do you want?” I groan, knowing I won’t be able to go back to sleep anytime soon. It’s Sunday morning and I need to recuperate after last night’s drama fest before I start work again tomorrow.
“How was your night?” Kenzie asks, walking in and sitting on the side of my bed.
I sit up, pulling the covers up around my shoulders to keep the warmth. “Eventful.”
“Like fiancé status eventful?” Kenzie asks, and my gaze bounces back and forth between her and Evie.
“What do you mean?” Glancing at my clock on the wall, it says it’s only eight thirty, way too early to be up right now. “Why are you both awake?”
“Millie got up to head to work and saw something we thought would be interesting. She didn’t want to wake you since you didn’t get in until late,” Kenzie says, leaning closer.
It’s then I notice the tablet in Evie’s hands. “Um, we figured you hadn’t seen this.”
She clicks the button on the tablet and there is a picture of Miles and me standing near the refreshment table. I hadn’t even noticed someone taking pictures.
The headline is what draws my attention next, and I have to suck in a breath.
HEALTHCARE HEIR ENGAGED?
How did people know about that? We’d only been talking to one person. My stomach drops.
Tanya must have spread the word.
Why would she care enough about a new relationship for Miles, unless she still has feelings for him?
I usually steer clear of drama that involves me. The cruise with Landon and Rachelle had been fun because of the prodding and pushing I could do for my brother, while not having to be right in the middle of it.
But this is bordering on war territory and I’m not too excited about it.
Then I think of the man in the middle, the kind, caring, sweet Miles and how he’s been able to change my jaded view of men in the past week. There might not be too many men like him out there, and I’m suddenly hoping that August never comes.
“So?” Kenzie asks, pointing to the tablet.
“So what? His jealous ex-girlfriend probably spread the news.”
Evie leans closer, touching my shoulder in order to turn me enough to see my face. “Wait, you’re not surprised by the fiancé rumors? Did he propose last night?”
I rub my face with my hands, trying to allow my mind to wake up enough for this conversation. This is why I didn’t want to get up yet. My brain is lagging from the late night.
“We’ve talked about getting engaged,” I say. I grimace because it’s still the truth, but there are some serious omissions going on here.
