Story: Lawless Ride
“Even if I knew, you’d be the last person I told,” Glenda hissed at me. “I don’t owe you anything, Travis. Truth is, you owe me, and I’m not finished with you yet.”
“Are you threatening me, Glenda?”
She shrugged. Eyes narrowed and anger on her heavily made-up face.
At that moment, I realized Glenda Crandall definitely had enough venomous hate inside her to kill somebody who got in her way.
I wonder if her sister does too? Are they that much alike?
Sheriff’s Office. Coyote Creek.
As Harlan and I booked Glenda on suspicion of murder, I wasn’t sure if she was guilty of it, but certain she was capable of it. That girl had a vindictive streak she couldn’t hide. With her locked up for the next twenty-four hours, at least, I’d have time to sort things out for Ray.
After taking Glenda’s mug shot and securing her in a cell, Harlan sat with Molly at her desk and gave his version of all the reports we were behind on. The crime scene at Dangerfield’s, the visit to Josie’s doctor, Kyle Dangerfield’s notification, Glenda’s arrest. We’d been busy.
Ted and I had already dictated our reports to Molly, and she had typed them into her computer. Harlan was last.
While waiting for him, I sat in my office and made a list of people I had to talk to.
Brenda Crandall – about her sister and Ray.
Josie Masters – about Ray and Tanya
Grant Andrews – about beating Harlan up
Art Andrews – about beating me and Harlan up
Hannah Hargrove – about mustangs she might have in her corral.
Tammy and Lucy – about how sorry I am
Before my list was finished, Harlan came into the office and plopped down in a chair. “We need to go to Glenda’s house and search for the gun.”
“Yeah, we do. Have Molly dig up an address for her. We’ll search while we have her locked up—first thing tomorrow morning.”
Harlan grinned. “I’ll go get the address.”
I mumbled to myself. “We’re spending a helluva lot of time in Shelby—the new crime capital of our county.”
Harlan came back with a yellow Post-it in his hand. “We’re good to go.”
“Yep. First thing tomorrow,” I said. “I really hope we find the gun. I’m liking Glenda for Ray’s murder more and more.”
“She’s nasty,” said Harlan. “And definitely a stalker. Look at how she stalked you at the roadhouse.”
“How can I forget?”
Wild Stallion Ranch.
Harlan was happy we got home in time to saddle up and ride to the back of the ranch to check the cameras.
I figured no more of Hannah’s boys would take a chance coming onto my property after the wild horses, but Harlan was convinced they would.
We galloped all the way back there and as usual, Harlan was right. This time one of the cameras captured a single rider and Harlan recognized him right away.
“That’s the short red-haired guy we saw in Hannah’s bunkhouse. Let’s go get the fucker and charge him with trespassing.”
“Tomorrow,” I said. “That’s on the list for tomorrow. Tonight, we need long hot showers and a couple of beers. We’re too beat up for another fight today.”
