Story: Lawless Ride
“Police, Andrews. Open the door. I need to talk to you.”
A skinny woman came to the door. All strung-out like Christmas lights. Eyes weird as a cross-eyed cat. Figured she was Josie Masters. High and happy. Merry widow.
I pushed her backwards into the trailer, spun her around and cuffed her hands behind her back. She just stood there with a stunned look on her face and let me do it.
Hanging onto the chain between Josie’s cuffs, I moved into the kitchen. “Let’s go, Mister Andrews. You’re wanted at the sheriff’s office for questioning.”
“I’m busy.” He popped the top on a fresh can of brew.
I drew my gun and pointed it at him. “You. Now. Out to my truck.”
He laughed as he jumped up and threw the beer can at me. One quick pivot and he ran for it.
I let go of Josie to run after Grant Andrews, and she ran the other way, screaming her druggie head off.
Harlan heard the screams and breached the back door with a loud crack.
As soon as I saw Harlan heading for the boyfriend, I went after Josie and caught her on the driveway as she was trying to get into her car.
I jerked her out of the fuckin Subaru and stuffed her into the back of the squad as fast as I could. I secured her and let the dogs out.
Running top speed back into the trailer to help Harlan, I found the trailer empty. Ran straight through and out the back with the dogs ahead of me.
Harlan was taking Andrews down on the next road over.
“Max, go.” I gave the command and Max dove in to help Harlan. Sarge and I caught up, and once the two dogs were on the job tugging at Grant Andrew’s clothes and keeping him down on the ground, it was easy to cuff him.
“Get your fuckin dogs off me,” he hollered.
I whistled and both of them sat down beside my leg. “They’re off. Let’s go.”
Harlan brushed the dirt off his clothes and took a couple of breaths to catch up on oxygen. Big grin on his face like there always was after he’d been fighting. He lived for the adrenaline rush.
Giving him a minute to breathe, I asked, “You didn’t get hurt, did you?”
He laughed. “Nope. Got dirty. Not hurt.”
We loaded Grant Andrews into the back of the squad next to Josie Masters and took off. On the way out of the park, I pointed to the trailer where Tibor Garrison had lived with Tammy.
“That trailer is where I found Tammy.”
“Huh,” said Harlan. “She ain’t said much to me about where she came from.”
“No good memories to talk about.”
Floyd Boyd & Son. Shelby.
Ted proudly showed his badge to the lady at the front desk in the construction office. He didn’t know too many people in Shelby, but the woman looked familiar to him.
“Deputy Ted Wallace, ma’am. Mister Boyd around?”
“He’s in his office.” She pointed and didn’t bother getting up. “Just knock and go on in.”
“Thanks.”
Ted tapped on the door, opened it, and walked in. “Mister Boyd, Deputy Ted Wallace from the county sheriff’s office. Could I talk to you for a minute about Tory Masters?”
Boyd glanced up from his work with a scowl of annoyance on his face. “Where is Tory? Is he missing or something? He didn’t show up for work and he didn’t call. I tried his cell twice and he isn’t answering.”
