Story: Ensnared By the Shadow King
She grinned at me, the expression bigger and brighter than any I’d seen from her. “Yep.”
“Shit. How do you know?” I checked.
“You can feel it with your magic.” She released Jesh, grabbing my arm. “Here, I’ll show you. Turn around, bastards.” She waved them off.
Both men turned around, though they grumbled as they did so.
“Why did they need to turn around?” I whispered, as she led me away from them.
She winked at me. “They didn’t. I just like to annoy them.”
I snorted, and she grinned. “Here.”
We stopped just far enough away that I didn’t think they’d hear us. There were trees surrounding us, and since we were still in our forests, the shadows danced through the trees, tugging lightly at any loose strands of our hair as the light breeze did the same.
“Put your hand here.” She lowered her hand to her heart. “A fae child starts as a tiny flicker of magic, buried in the center of his or her mother’s power. If it’s there, there’ll be no mistaking the feeling.”
I nodded, closing my eyes and focusing on my magic. It was still so surreal to feel Namir’s power intertwined with mine, the magic breathtakingly-strong yet also soft and comforting.
When I felt that spark—the small, almost nonexistent spark—in the center of my power, my eyes flew open, my lips parting.
It didn’t feel like magic, it felt like… life.
“Shit,” I breathed.
Lav’s grin widened. “Our babies will be best friends,” she decided, throwing an arm around my shoulder and walking me back to the men.
“Or worst enemies,” I tossed back.
That only made her laugh. “I’ll be fine with either.”
I would too, to be honest.
“Alright assholes, you can turn back around,” Lav declared. Both men spun, and my eyes collided with Namir’s.
He wore his usual playful grin, but now I knew how to read his emotions beneath it.
He was nervous—and hopeful.
“I’m pregnant,” I admitted.
“Just what the world needs—another Night royal fighting for the throne,” Jesh drawled.
Lavee released me so she could stride over and elbow him in the gut, hard.
Namir crossed the space between us in two steps, his hands cupping my face. “Let me feel,” he murmured.
I nodded, watching intently as he closed his eyes.
A moment passed, and then his expression shifted to one of wonder. “Stars, Love,” he breathed.
“It’s a good thing we’ve got two years to get ready,” I admitted, biting my lip.
He swept me off the ground and into his arms, capturing my lips with his. My arms wrapped around his neck as he kissed the hell out of me, our shadows swirling around us.
“You are fucking incredible,” he told me, his eyes shining with emotion.
I flashed him a small smile. “You’re not so bad yourself.”
