Story: Black Curtain
“Who cares? What sick fuck makes a recording of their parents having sex?”
Black grabbed hold of me from behind, yanking me up against him.
Gripping my hair tightly in a hand, he pulled my head sideways and kissed my neck. Pain rippled through me so intensely I couldn’t breathe.
For a few seconds, I could barely stand it.
I felt weird as hell, though, dealing with my own pain, and Black’s, while watching two people who were clearly related to Brick the Vampire King fuck in front of us. Especially since they probablywerehis parents, and they were currently having loud, very enthusiastic, relatively animalistic sex on the couch. I watched her boobs bounce under his hands as he thrust into her aggressively, letting out low growls as he held himself back.
Even knowing they’d probably been dead for centuries, it was weird as hell.
Black gripped me tighter, but I felt his annoyance with that weirdness, too.
“What is this even supposed to be telling us?” I asked. I was still watching them, unable to tear my eyes away. Fascinated, I watched their sweaty faces as the couple switched positions, and he began fucking her from behind. “Do we even know what this supposed ‘mystery’ consists of? Does someone kill the two of them? Vampires maybe?”
Black shook his head. “I have no idea. More to the point, why the hell would he need us to solve it, whatever it is? Especially when he’s cut off our sight?”
“Well, I did have a thought about that.”
I looked away from the humans having sex, craning my neck up and back to meet Black’s gaze. Seeing the glassed look of his gold eyes, I fought not to react.
“In here, Black.” I motioned around the room, up at the ceiling, indicating the interior of the house itself. “I think our sight works in here, Black. But only here.”
As long as we keep it inside the building,I added in my mind.I think we can see. We already knew we could talk to one another. That means our sight isn’t cut off totally. We can probably use it in other ways too, as long as we don’t try to reach anyone outside the building. Or do anything that requires us to aim our light anywhere else.
Seeing the dawning realization in Black’s eyes, I added apologetically,
I should have realized before. I knew we could interact with one another. I noticed it when we first woke up… when we were all hearing one another. I just didn’t put it all together until just now. It was too loud.I motioned around my head with both hands, grimacing. With everyone else’s thoughts in the way, I couldn’t think. It was so loud.
Black looked at me.
He nodded slowly, wrapping an arm around the front of me. He pressed into me again, pulling me against his chest. I felt another confused, frustrated wash of emotion off him, but even in all of that, the puzzlement never left his light.
We watched the couple fuck for a few minutes more.
I struggled not to react when the male shoved his fingers in her ass and she moaned.
I still don’t get it,Black sent, pulling my eyes off her face.I don’t see how we could solve this any easier than he could. Brick,he clarified in my mind.Do you? I mean, they’re people. He should know the history by now. They aren’t seers. He could have fed off people who would know, and they would tell him everything. He’s been on this world longer than me.
I don’t understand why like this,I added, following his mind.Even if there’s some way our seer’s vision would help, why do it like this? Why risk pissing us off like this? He could have hired us. Especially now. We sort of owe him after Saratoga.
Black frowned. I could practically feel him thinking.
He hated this. He hated stupid games like this.
Which was likely why Brick had done it.
Yeah,he sent.I don’t get it.
I shook my head, but not in disagreement.
“I don’t, either,” I said aloud. “Unless he plans to kill us.”
Still thinking, I went on without censoring my own words.
“…Or, maybe more likely, if he intends to kill most of our friends. All the refugee seers, and the ones left in the wedding party. He would have kept Jem for Nick. And maybe he spared Jax for you, since Jax is with Kiko now. Maybe he’ll even spare Yarli, since she’s with Manny. But he’d likely want to kill the rest of them. The seers, I mean. With all of them high on space cakes and us out of the way, he could probably do it pretty easily. Keep a few to feed on and to control us. We’d never pose a threat to him or his people again.”
Still on the same line of thought, I added,
