Story: Bad Magic

My phone rang.

Rune threw his head back and laughed, a deep pleasant sound that lifted goose bumps all over me.

I checked the screen.“It’s Jagger.”

“Are you going to answer it?”

Was I?It stopped—then started again.Rune laughed harder.

I got the feeling Jagger would keep ringing until I answered.

I tapped the screen.

“What the fuck are you doing?”he said before I could say a word.

“Jagger?”I said, even though I knew it was him.I felt kind of tipsy, honestly, and not totally myself.“Why are you calling me?I told you to leave me alone.”

“Get out of that apartment and get your ass downstairs, now.”

“What?”I rasped.

“He followed you here,” Rune said and winked.

I remembered the demon looking over my shoulder when I got here.Rune already knew Jagger was out there.“Why did you follow me?”

“Because you’re a reckless little idiot who obviously needs protection.”

“That wasn’t very nice,” Rune said.

“No, it wasn’t.That wasn’t very nice, Charming,” I said to Jagger.“And maybe you should stop talking to me like I’m one of the hounds you order around every day.”

“You think Rune is being nice, Sutton? For fuck’s sake.Leave that fucker’s apartment right the fuck now.”

“Stop cursing at me.You’re always cursing at me, and Rune is nice.”Rune winked.“He’s also extremely handsome in a scary, sexy kind of way.”

“Thank you, lovely,” Rune said, a wicked and highly amused expression on his face.“You’re rather beautiful yourself.”

Jagger growled, so loud I jumped.“If you touch her while you have her all hopped up on your fucking demon mojo, I’ll shred you and deal with the fallout from Lucifer later.”

Rune laughed again, dark and gritty.“If you want to wait outside for Sutton until we’re done with our conversation, feel free, but we have business to take care of, isn’t that right, beautiful?”

“Yep, that’s right…handsome.”

Rune almost busted a gut laughing, while Jagger snarled, then roared.I heard him through the phone and echoing from outside somewhere at the same time.

He was definitely here.

“I think you should hang up now,” Rune said.

“Oh, yes, you’re probably right.”

“Don’t you fucking dare?—”

I hung up.

“You won,” Rune said.

“I don’t know, was that really jealousy?I think it was more just a penis-measuring contest.”
