Story: A Rogue Cowboy Finds Love
"Mama? What's wrong?"
"Nothing, sweetie. I'm just happy." Phoebe looked over at the kitchen, at the man upending her world. "That's too much," she said.
"It's my money. I want it to go to the two of you. I don't have anyone else. It feels good to me."
She felt the truth of his words. That he didn't have anyone. That it mattered to him.
"Take it," Jacob said. "You won't ever get it, because we're both going to be rocking and rolling well into triple digits, so really, it's theoretical only."
"Well, in that case, okay." She turned back to Ryan. "Sounds good."
"Great. I'll have the paperwork over to you shortly. We'll use a remote notary until you can sign in person. It will stand up in court."
"Today?"
"As Jacob said, bunnies are everywhere." He was chuckling when he said it. "I'll call back when I'm sending the files." He said his good-bye, then hung up.
Phoebe leaned the phone against her chin, watching her daughter descend into giggles as Jacob put batter on her nose. There was absolute connection between them, and it let her know it was the right choice to pick Jacob, not some woman she didn't know who was in hiding somewhere else. "Can I use your phone to call Eliana?"
He shook his head. "Call Dylan. He'll call Eliana. She doesn't want to speak to us directly."
"Right. Okay. I'm going to make the call in the bedroom." The last thing she needed was Annie hearing her make plans for when she died. Annie made Phoebe promise that she'd be right back, and then she hurried into the bedroom.
She shut the door and then sat on the bed. The room had been so sparse when they'd first walked in, but now it was filled with everything a six-year-old could want. The Harts had jumped into action to make her and Annie feel safe, and they had the heart and financial resources to make it happen.
She hadn't known families like this existed, even though they weren't biological, they were still everything to each other.
With a wistful sigh, she pulled up Dylan's name and hit send.
He answered immediately. "Everything okay?"
His concern was genuine, and it made her smile. "This is Phoebe. Everything's good."
"Phoebe! Hey! It's great to hear from you. How's it going with my brother? I know he's unusual, but he's a good man."
She smiled as she picked up a sweatshirt of Jacob's that was folded neatly on the dresser. "He's amazing. Thanks for sending him to get us."
"Amazing?" Dylan paused, surprise evident in his voice. "Jacob's amazing?"
"He is." She took a deep breath. "I'm calling because Eliana makes all her clients have a will in which they identify who will raise their kids if something happens to them."
Dylan pivoted with practiced ease, making her wonder how many of Eliana's clients he'd worked with over the years. "Yes, I've heard her talk about that."
"Well, right now, I have a woman designated that Eliana recommended, but I don't know her. Annie's never met her."
Dylan hesitated, clearly trying to figure out where the conversation was going. "Annie won't ever need her, but it's good to have an option."
"I want to change my will from that woman to Jacob."
There was absolute silence.
"Dylan?"
"Did you just say you wanted to designate Jacob to be Annie's guardian if anything happens to you?"
"Yes, exactly."
"Does he know this?"
