Page 1 of You Will Never Be Me

PROLOGUE

There is a game I like to play on my own. It’s a game we’re all playing, but most people don’t know they’re playing it. It’s called: How Much Is Your Life Worth? If you were to drop dead right this very moment, how big a hole would there be in my life?

People often say things like, “I can’t live without you.” They rarely ever mean it. But I did. When I said it to you, I meant every word. I’d thought about it, really considered everything—the you-shaped hole that would be left in my life if you were gone. It would devastate me. Obliterate everything like an imploding star turning into a black hole, sucking everything into its gaping maw. Your life was worth so much.

Just not as much as mine.
