Page 51 of Wulf’s Pack
“Victor and his wolves are evil bastards,” I say.
“They don’t deserve a fair fight, and they won’t give you one.
There is nothing dishonorable about doing what it takes to defend yourselves.
” The whole Keller family looks surprised by my response, but I shrug.
“I have no problem with you using silver bullets on our enemies. I only worry about what it will do to you all emotionally, considering what happened to Sophia and Preston.”
Sophia and Preston share a glance and squeeze each other’s hands. “It won’t bother us,” Sophia promises.
Preston nods as well. “I’ll feel better knowing Sophia has the means to protect herself.”
They aren’t lying, and I feel no anxiety through the pack bond, so I accept them at their word and ask Preston another question. “You were stuck in wolf form.”
He nods, but doesn’t look the least bit deterred.
“You’re right. I have no idea how to use a gun, but I’m a decent fighter.
I’m not an alpha, but our pack used to be a dangerous place for weaker wolves.
It was full of bullies.” He nods toward his best friend.
“Luke was one of our lead enforcers. He’s been training me for years how to protect myself and my family against stronger more dominant wolves. ”
That makes me crack a grin. “You fight dirty.”
Preston’s answering smile is shameless. “Not my fault if overconfident alphas don’t bother to learn to fight smart.”
My grin turns to a full-fledged smile. I love my pack.
“Okay, then.” I rub my hands together. “While we’re waiting for some leads from the FUA, Sophia, if you could please take care of Audrey?”
“Of course, Alpha.”
I turn to Micah, who is still holding our youngest pack member. “Take her to my room. Help Sophia get her cleaned up and let her sleep in my bed.”
Micah nods and heads for the apartment, with Sophia trailing behind. I turn to Elise next. “You’ve got your phone on, right? Hopefully we’ll get some responses to the news report. We also need to get you, Matt, and Sophia set up with guns.”
“The guns we have,” Matt says. “Finding silver bullets for them will be the problem.”
Bree snorts. “Wulf’s ex-clan brother probably has a whole closet full of them, and if he doesn’t, he’ll know how to get them.”
I point at her. “Very true. Let’s get Illren on it. I’m sure he’ll be happy to help.”
I look to Matt. “Let him know the situation, and he’ll get you whatever you need.”
Matt’s face pales. “You want me to call the assassin?”
I try not to, but I chuckle. Illren is terrifying. I clamp my beta on the shoulder and say to Matt, “Don’t worry. Bree can deal with Illren. You just tell her what you need.”
Bree side-eyes me. “Thanks, sir,” she says dryly.
I grin. “You’ll be fine. Kovros appreciates beautiful, strong, feisty women.”
Bree snorts again.
Turning to the rest of my waiting pack, I address the three visiting wolves. “Elise mentioned you have expressed interest in joining our pack.”
The three men exchange glances. Jack clears his throat. “That’s correct. Myself, my wife, Sean, his wife, and his two children.”
“I would be happy to have you all, however this is pretty terrible timing. If you’d like to keep your families unaffiliated with us and out of harm’s way until this is over, I understand. Your acceptance will not be hindered by whether or not you choose to fight with us.”
The men all share looks again, then each fall to one knee. “Thank you for this honor, Alpha,” Jack says. “We accept and pledge our loyalty to you and this pack. We will proudly fight alongside you.”
And, not surprisingly, my bite-happy wolf surges forward, taking over before I can stop him. He shifts me right out of my damn pants again. Damn it, you impatient bastard! We need to talk to Alpha Fuller first, and give their families warning!
My wolf does not care, nor does he listen to me.
In less than a minute, he’s slashed his claws through their old pack marks and claimed them as ours.
I’m sorry , I say through our new link as soon as their bonds are formed.
My wolf has been a little too enthusiastic lately.
With Skylar in so much danger, I’ve been struggling with control.
My wolf huffs.
We understand, Alpha , Jack says.
Your alpha will have felt the bond sever. I’ll call him and explain. Call your families before they panic.
Yes, Alpha.
Welcome to the pack.
Satisfied and annoyingly smug, my wolf allows me to shift back.
I quickly search for the phone I had in my pocket.
Isabella’s a step ahead of me, already holding it out.
“Thanks.” Searching through my contacts for Alpha Fuller’s number, I say, “Take Ben and Easton and set up some kind of patrol. We need to assume Victor will attack at any moment. Jack, Sean, and Luke can help as soon as they’ve contacted their families. ”
Isabella nods. “We’re on it, Alpha.”
I’m already holding the ringing phone to my ear as I give her one last nod of thanks, then I head to my makeshift office praying my new ally will accept my apology. Alpha Fuller picks up just as I close the door behind me. “What the hell is going on?” he snaps.
“They’re fine,” I assure him quickly. “It was me.”
“You claimed them?” He sounds surprised and annoyed, but thankfully not enraged as I expected.
I plop down in a chair with a sigh. “I’m so sorry. It’s a long story, but I’ve been having control issues with my wolf ever since I met Skylar.”
“Your mate?”
“Yes. She’s my fated mate.”
“Fated! I didn’t think those stories were true.”
I rake a hand through my hair for the billionth time in the last hour.
I can only hope I’m not bald by the end of this.
“It’s true. No doubt about it. She’s my fated.
The connection was instant. And considering I was a lone wolf and she’s an omega with a psycho ex alpha after her, my wolf has been nearly out of his mind.
He’s been claiming shifters left and right.
It’s why I started a pack. The moment your guys confirmed they wanted to join and would pledge their loyalty, my wolf took control and claimed them.
I tried to stop him, but he knew you’d already given your consent and didn’t really care about following protocol.
With Skylar missing, I’m barely hanging onto my sanity right now. ”
Evan releases a long sigh over the phone.
“I understand. I’m glad they’re all right.
And yes, I did give them permission to join you.
I remember when Preston and Sophia were attacked.
It was devastating for a lot of the pack.
They were some of our best wolves. They’re lucky Alpha Day didn’t kill the whole family when they asked to leave. ”
“Why didn’t he?”
“Honestly, I think he was just being vindictive. He was insulted that they’d rather leave the protection of his pack than lose a feral wolf who isn’t even an alpha. I think he figured Preston would kill them eventually, and it would serve them right.”
I growl before reminding myself that Alpha Day is long dead.
“Anyway, we’re all grateful to your mate for saving Preston. I couldn’t believe it when I heard the news. And then I was doubly shocked to hear that they’d been taken into a pack and that Wulf Winters was their new alpha.”
I blow out a heavy breath through puffed cheeks, then let a chuckle slip. “You think you were shocked.”
He snickers. “Yeah. If you really did lose control, I can’t imagine how you felt when you realized you now had a pack.”
“Still reeling from it.”
Our laughter dies quickly. “I’m sorry about your mate,” Evan says quietly.
“We’re going to get her back.”
“Tell me how I can help.”
I dive into the story, giving Evan a bit of background on the situation, but before we can work something out, Isabella knocks on the office door. “Come in!” I shout.
Isabella enters and dips her head in a respectful nod. “I’m sorry to interrupt, Alpha, but we have some visitors, and I really, really think you need to see them. They claim they can help find Luna Skylar.”
I’m on my feet in an instant.
“Go take care of that,” Evan says, having heard Isabella. “Call me back when you have time. I can lend you some of my wolves.”
“Thanks, Evan. I owe you one.”
“Call it even. I’ll be waiting to hear from you.”
