“I need to leave,” I state.
MAVERICK
She needs to leave.
“The fuck?” I ask.
She smiles, but she doesn’t say anything immediately. Instead, her gaze searches mine. I wait for her to say something, but I don’t know what she’s going to say. I was so intoxicated by the fact that she was here, so fucking pussy drunk by her that I didn’t think about why she was actually here.
“You need to leave?” I ask when she doesn’t continue.
“I need to go back to my hotel room.”
My brows rise at her words. She tries to take a step backward, but I don’t let her. Wrapping my arm around her, I pull her closer to me. Her lush tits press against my chest, and I have to fight the urge to slam my mouth against her, kiss her, drag her to my room, and fuck her again.
As much as I want to do that, I don’t. “Why the hell do you want to go back to your room?” I ask.
“This is just…” Her words trail off. “It’s too much.”
“Too much?”
I’m about two seconds from telling her to fuck off. She’s not telling me what the fuck is going on here. She showed up out of the blue, and now she doesn’t want to come inside. I wasn’t going to ask her why she was here until later.
Until my balls were beyond empty. I figured I had a couple more fucks in me tonight until that happened. I think we could probably have the conversation sometime tomorrow afternoon.
“The clubhouse,” she says. “It’s too much.”
Taking a step back from her, I run my fingers through my hair before I tug on the ends. Clearing my throat, I shake my head a few times as I close my eyes in a long blink. When I reopen them, my focus finds her.
“You want to expand on that too much?” I ask. When she doesn’t answer me, I lift my hands and take another step backward. “You know what?”
“What?” she asks.
Though, she didn’t fucking have to. I didn’t want an answer. I continue. “There are ten women in there that will fall to their knees for me. You don’t want to come inside, fine. Go back to your motel. I don’t know what the fuck you even came here for.”
Walking past her, I head into the clubhouse, slamming the door behind me. The music is loud, the bass pumping throughthe room. I don’t bother looking behind me to see if Zadie followed me inside.
She didn’t.
If she had, I would have felt it.
Sensed it.
CHAPTER EIGHT
ZADIE
Climbing out of the Jeep,I dig through my purse and find the room key. I open the door and slip inside, closing and locking the door behind me. My car is the only one in the parking lot, so I assume it’s quiet and safe here, but also, I’m not taking any chances. Placing my purse, keys, and bakery box on the small table in the corner, I let out a heavy sigh.
I flip the lid of the box open and reach for the cupcake, my emotional support cupcake that I wisely bought myself earlier. I knew I was going to need it. I just wasn’t sure how much. Now I know.
It’s because I’m a coward.
I start to sit down in the single small chair next to the table but decide against it. I need a soft bed. I don’t care if I get crumbs anywhere. I’m the only one in the bed, and it’s not mine.
Sinking onto the edge of the mattress, I peel back the paper that’s wrapped around the cupcake before I open my mouth wide and take a bite. I can feel the buttercream touch my nose, and I would care… but I don’t.
Closing my eyes, I chew the soft cupcake and try my hardest not to cry. I’m interrupted in my self-pity by my phone buzzing in my back pocket. Opening my eyes, I let out a sigh, then reach for the device, unlock it, and look down at the new notification.
