Chapter 44

Life

D eath called her home.

His flower, nothing more than fallen petals in her reaper’s arms. Yet, Life beckoned the flower, as Death had always done to her.

A small thumping of tiny feet across the ground of the forest, vines and flowers and trees bending towards her in an attempt to worship Life in all her forms.

Death knew her best.

He knew her in the way her heart stuttered.

He knew her in the way her breath stopped, pained and tight in her chest.

He knew her for all the grazes and scratches she accumulated over her skin in the years she spent running from him.

Each movement, each look, each fingertip trailing over sensitive nerves.

He knew her.

For he was the one to breathe Life into her.

He, who gave her her favourite name.

So when Death called Life home, she breathed back into him and entwined their souls so that they would once more be together within the protection of the Elysian Forest.

When Death called Life home, she returned and the girl’s eyes opened to a universe swirling within them.
